The Dead Weather - “Horehound”
**** ½
Reviewed By Lois Elswick
Self dubbed “rock supergroup”, The Dead Weather, is the latest Jack White project. He recruited Alison Mosshart of The Kills for vocals, Jack Lawrence from the Raconteurs for guitar and Queens of the Stone Age’s Dean Fertita for bass, while stationing himself back behind the drums. Recorded in Nashville, this album is a raw exploration of the gritty side of blues, with Mosshart’s vocals growling and sneering through the riffs. It reminds one of New Orleans, the swamp, evil back alleys and basically just an overwhelming sense of doom. Gothic blues may be a relatively unexplored genre but one definitely worth expanding.
