Nobody will love or even really like every song off of “Covered. A Revolution in Sound: Warner Brothers Records.” Any compilation that mixes Mastodon and Disturbed with Michelle Branch and Missy Higgins is bound to be too diverse to attract every ear, but the toxic disconnection between the artists is only a minor problem when the performances sound this phoned in. Most bands play it safe here, not wanting to risk any artistic interpretation of the songs we’ve heard a thousand times. Even the brilliant Against Me! disappoints here with a by-the-book cover of the Replacements’ “Here Comes a Regular,” which is more disheartening knowing how passionately AM! has covered the Replacements’ “Bastards of Young” live. When scream kings The Used do try to paint outside the lines on a cover of the Talking Heads “Burning Down the House,” it is such an aural catastrophe that it could be cited as the reason David Bryne is back on tour. Some songs hit the mark, like Taking Back Sunday’s cover of Tom Petty’s “You Wreck Me” or the Flaming Lips’ reworking of Madonna’s “Borderline,” but ultimately nothing sticks. – Tim Webb
