Based on the book by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is the story of a young boy living a normal life who discovers that he is in fact the son of the Greek God Poseidon. He learns this bizarre truth when he is attacked by a (thought to be) substitute teacher because it is rumored he stole Zeus’ lightning bolt.
In the blink of an eye, it turns out that his best friend, Grover, is really his assigned protector, a satyr no less, and his teacher is Chiron (Pierce Brosnan), the centaur leader of a demigod safe haven/ training camp. Unfortunately, Percy does not have a lot of time to get used to his new situation because if Zeus doesn’t get his lightning bolt back by the summer solstice there’s going to be war.
With barely any time to meet Annabeth, daughter of Athena, Percy learns that his mother has been abducted by Hades. Having no clue what to do, or how to do it, Percy, Grover and Annabeth join up to save Percy’s mother from the underworld. They find that their journey is all a trick to bring war upon the Gods.
This is a movie that will appeal to the kid in all of its viewers. It has a good mix of comedy, action, myth and adventure that will keep you wishing the story will never stop unfolding. At times the acting will come into question and it will seem a bit cheesy. If you have two hours to unwind and enjoy an adventure movie with laughs and a touch of the real world, this will keep you entertained.
