Misery Jackals
EP
EPThe Misery Jackals are white lightning; 100% Pure Akron distilled in the old ‘shine rig down by the river. A mixture of old-school punk and bluegrass the band calls “Pillbilly Browngrass”, the Jackals feature several former members of local favorites the Nimrods on banjo, bass, guitar and drums, as well as the be-eyepatched Pirate Jenny on accordion. The songs portray vivid scenes of Akron life, from “Rollergirl Gail”, the eternal decision of “Crack and Similac”, the twisted horrors of the “Mill Street Crosswalk” and the important life lessons of “Keep It In Yer Pants”. “The Ominous Anthropophagous Slackeye Slim” maybe not so much; an awesome Old West-style ballad of a disfigured baby who grows into cannibalism and eventually full-on zombiehood, but plenty of us will still relate. “Charlie Johnson” tells the tale of a remorseful, fearful soldier and is perhaps the only dragger on the album. The closer, the “Misery Jackal” theme song, is a straight-up punk anthem (only played on different instruments) and hints at the hillbilly punk covers the band is known and loved for in their live shows. – Jim Reynolds
