Red Sun Rising
Self Titled
Red Sun Rising comes out swinging with their self-titled debut album’s lead-off track, “Numbers.” Guitarist Ryan Williams summons the hands of Slash and delivers a blistering riff so bodaciously badass it would have Mother Teresa throwing up the devil horns. Their in-your-face approach carries over into the next two tracks, “Cognition” and “Too Late,” with rumbling drum rolls and a showcase of the incredible vocal power of front man Mike Protich. You’re able to catch your breath for a moment with the effect-heavy track, “Bury Me Today,” and the mainly mellow, but nonetheless haunting song, “What’s Going On.” Next is “Beautiful Suicide.” This is the type of song that every band wants to write; it has the power to take even a reluctant listener to another dimension. Protich continues to showcase exactly what separates Red Sun Rising from all the rest with another awe-inspiring vocal performance on “What You Are To Me.” Then, there’s the lyrically-direct call-to-arms, “9 to 5r,” before the emotionally weighted “Cole.” Finally, we get the all out, balls-to-the-wall, “Blackula;” a finish so big Peter North would be jealous. With a debut album this kick-ass, I think Ohio has found its new rock and roll poster-child. Sorry Devo. -Dustin Dykes
