Tim “Ripper” Owens
Play My Games
Fantasy rock. Story songs. Serious vocal skills and wailing guitars. Reminiscent of Ronnie James Dio – God rest his talented soul.
Do those words make your eyes roll or your fingers automatically throw up the rock n’ roll devil horns? If you picked option number two, then you will love Tim “Ripper” Owens 2009 album, Play My Game.
First off, this guy can sing. He has the perfect fantasy rock howl that goes well with lyrics about epic quests and life lessons, as in “Death Race” and “The Shadows are Alive.” His slick and impressive website (Seriously, Google this guy!) says this solo effort had Owens involved in every aspect of his songs, which is pretty remarkable when you hear him wail on his guitar and belt out some high notes on one of his fable-like songs. His tour schedule shows he’s an important voice in the metal crowd, and it’s pretty great to take a listen to a hometown boy who’s played Russia, Israel and Akron in the last month alone.
Nonetheless, everything that makes Owens so great in the classic rock crowd might make the indie/alt crowd cringe. Proceed with caution and ask yourself the above question before you take a listen. Trust me.
