With ear-splitting vocals and explosive guitar playing, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals impact the rock scene with their new self-titled album. Potter’s incredible vocal talents are unmatched among today’s artists, enveloping country, rock, soul and blues simultaneously. Potter also plays guitar, joined by Scott Tournet on guitars and harmonica, Matthew Burr on drums, Catherine Popper on bass and Benny Yurco on rhythm guitar.
The beautifully funky “Paris (Ooh La La)” starts the album off with a bang, conjuring up comparisons to a young Diana Ross or Janis Joplin, alongside a shredding guitar. Grace delves into some very blues-oriented rock for the next two tracks, with a bit of spanish flavor on “Oasis,” and a twist of motown on “Medicine.” “Goodbye Kiss” continues the hodge-podge trend with an almost reggae rhythm and southern rock influences. The album also contains the mainstream “Tiny Light” single, which captures Potter’s Joplin-esque scream while bringing the band to the attention of a more modern audience. Guess she’s gotta pay the bills somehow. She also demands some r-e-s-p-e-c-t on the eleventh track, “That Phone,” doing her best Aretha Franklin impression.
The range of styles is almost as impressive as Potter’s voice, which will likely carry the band to new heights. A definite must-hear.
