Pop-punk phenoms Just Surrender are preparing to release their third full length album, Phoenix on June 22nd. The album will include two songs that were originally released on an earlier EP called “Crazy” and “Stronger Now,” as well as ten brand new songs. The latest album sounds much like the bands earlier music, with everything from screaming vocals to acoustic melodies and everything in between on it.
By far the standout track on Phoenix is “Carried Away.” The song opens with some of the best acoustic guitar playing on the album, and it only continues to get better from there. With vocals provided by both Jason Maffucci, and Dan Simons (sharing the spotlight equally), they tell a love story about getting carried away by the feeling of being in love and not being concerned with anything in the outside world, even if it’s just for a few minutes. It is a beautiful song, and shows just how talented this band can be.
Another good song is “Through the Night”, with a completely different sound than “Carried Away” had. It’s one of the harder songs, from the heavy bass to the screaming vocals. What makes this so great is that it shows off just how diverse this band can be; they can play in so many different styles and make them all sound good.
While Phoenix might not be a smash hit for the band, it should earn them some well deserved respect. With everything from powerhouse anthems to sweet ballads, there is something that everyone can get into on this album.
