It’s hard to say anything bad about supergroup The Dead Weather. Made up of notorious guitarist Jack White, Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, and Jack Lawrence of the Raconteurs, the group has combined their unequivocal talents to create a monster of an album, Sea of Cowards, released May 11 by Third Man Records.

Although the album consists of 11 tracks, it’s relatively short. The tracks average about 3 minutes and the album itself is only about 35 minutes long. But it’s so jam-packed with different styles and funky riffs that it’s easy to listen to again and again.

The third track, “The Difference Between Us,” is a departure from their normal hard rock sound. It’s more eerie and futuristic, yet the guitar sounds undeniably White. The addition of the organ also creates a new, hard sound while still retaining a vintage feel. White and Mosshart switch off singing on this track and a few others, but their voices sound so similar that the transition is flawless, sometimes it’s hard to distinguish – oh, hey – the difference between them.

White has an unprecedented talent for writing catchy lyrics, finding the perfect words to emphasize the beat. This album has his classic mark, lyrics that pop, yet are so simple you wonder why no one else thought of them. Listen to the last track, “Old Mary,” a sort of blasphemous psalm, and you may find yourself unable to stop singing, “Now until the moment of your last breath.”
