To celebrate their unofficial one year anniversary on Saturday night at the Northsiade Bar & Grille Get On Up played some of their biggest hits that their fans have grown to know and love, as well as some new songs that they have been working on recently. If you’ve never heard of Get On Up, you might want to take a little time and listen to their songs on their MySpace page and read a little bit about them. They are an incredibly talented band that does covers of some of the biggest funk and soul songs ever to be released. They cover everything from Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire to Michael Jackson and the Godfather of Soul himself James Brown. As if tackling those great artists wasn’t enough the band is also bringing some newer music into the mix, most notably Chaka Kahn.
The whole show was packed with amazing covers of some really great songs. It’s hard to be just a cover band sometimes because you are torn between keeping the songs the way they were originally recorded and adding your own artistic style and sound to them to make them your own. Get On Up does a great job of knowing how to find just the right combination of their unique sound with the way people expect the song to sound. The only song that seemed to have changed a little too much was when the band did a cover of “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” by James Brown. I was just a little too different from the original version that people have loved for years.
No matter what song they were playing or how different or similar it sounded though the audience loved it. All night long they were dancing and having a great time with the band. It felt like being on a smaller version of Soul Train, without all the crazy outfits though of course. Still it was s lot of fun just to watch everyone dancing to the music, you couldn’t help but have a good time.
One of the great things about this band is that they are all such talented musicians and they all get a chance to show them off at some point in the show, everyone takes turns as the lead singer on certain songs, or they have a long solo in a song. No one takes precedence over anyone else, and that is something that doesn’t happen too often.
If you were lucky enough to see Get On Up when they performed on Saturday night then you know first hand just what a talented band this is, and what a great show they put on. If you didn’t make it out to the show, but you’re a fan of this kind of music make sure to check out their tour schedule and check them out at another show this summer. You don’t want to miss this show, it will definitely make you want to ‘get on up’ out of your seat and have a great time dancing to the music.
