Psychostick Shtick

By Julia Kazar It seems like today most bands feel that if they don’t make it big and become hugely successful they give up on their music all together.  They care more about becoming famous than about enjoying themselves and having fun.  Psychostick isn’t one of these bands.  They are all about having fun, with everything they do.

Formed over ten years ago, Psychostick is a hard rock band that has always put having fun first.  They even find a way to laugh at their most embarrassing moments, like tripping on stage and their pants falling down.  If you look up any of their videos on YouTube it immediately becomes clear that these guys really are all about having fun. However, they take their music seriously too.  They’ve put a lot of thought and effort into all aspects of their band, even choosing their name.  “Our original name was Asinine, but that was too common, and we felt that if we wanted to be taken seriously we should have a more unique name.  So one day I just randomly thought of Psychostick and it stuck,” says Rob Kersey, the bands vocalist. Of course there are a few downsides to life in a band.  Never staying in one place very long, being broke all the time and, for Rob, going from having a good job at a bank to being what he calls himself, a “glorified bum.”  Rob says that this was the hardest part for him, going from a steady job and steady income to hoping that this band pays off.  But for him it was totally worth it for the simple fact that doing this makes him so much happier than his previous job did. Psychostick has been busy lately.  They have been touring most of the summer in support of their latest album, Sandwich.  The tour includes a stop at The Carriage House in Louisville, OH on July 31st.  It is sure to be a fun show full of crazy band antics and lots of booze.  Be sure to get your tickets as soon as possible. In addition to the intense tour schedule, the band has also been releasing new music which is available on the web and on iTunes.  “We’re huge internet guys; check out all our new songs on our website.  It also has our tour dates and an e-mail list,” says Rob. There are many things that make Psychostick a one of a kind band, but one of the most unique is that they donate a portion of their earnings from every show to different radio stations.  It’s a good system that more bands should really think about utilizing.  If the radio station can provide some proof that they promoted the show and helped to get a bigger crowd to come out for it, then the band will reimburse the radio station for what they have spent.  It’s a system that seems to work pretty well for the band, the radio stations get their name out there and more people come out to see Psychostick.  Everybody wins. Psychostick is not your average metal band and they’re okay with that.  As long as they are still having fun they see no reason to change things now.  And even if it’s a little hard to take them seriously sometimes (their biggest hit is a song called “Beer”) with over 1 million views on YouTube, they must be doing something right.
