Six Six Sex Show

October was a great month for Thirteenth Floor Gallery in Massillon, but November’s no slouch. Massillon artist Scot Phillips will be taking over the gallery beginning Nov. 20 for a show entitled “Six Six Sex.” “My artwork can have sexual implications,” said Phillips about how he coined the title. “I think it’s clever because there are many people who have strong feelings about the number 6-6-6. But to me, it’s just a number.” For his first solo show at Thirteenth Floor, Phillips will debut his signature style- most often immortalizing silent film beauty Clara Bow- painting in blacks and pinks on wood, cardboard and lots and lots of furniture. “I have a couple of dressers I’m painting and an old 1920s waterfall armoire. Lots of really messy, drippy, ugly things,” said Phillips. And his work will extend floor to ceiling with an elaborate takeover of the gallery’s feature wall. “My stuff doesn’t look great on white, white walls so I’m going to dirty them up!” But why the enchanting Ms. Bow? “It’s just one of those things. I watched a movie of her when I was a little kid and it sounds strange but I feel like she’s a kind of kindred spirit.” Phillips is the membership coordinator for the Massillon Museum and hopes to pursue a master’s degree in art history, focusing in the criticism modern art. The Massillon Scikotics, the local club for Scion car owners co-founded by Phillips, will be onsite for the event. Drive a Scion? There will be trophies handed out to the three best vehicles at the event!   The show opens at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, at Thirteenth Floor Gallery (28 Charles Street SE in downtown Massillon) and runs through Dec. 10, when fellow Massillon artist Bili Kribbs takes over. The free show is sponsored by Monster Energy Drink, with Stella Artois and Great Lakes Brewing, too. Nothing like the gift of buying art to give an artist birthday bliss.
