Get Drunk Up: Shmaltz He’Brew Messiah Bold

You can get Shmaltz He’Brew Messiah Bold from Portage Lakes Brewing Co. – 365 beers in store…one for every day of the year! Call 330-644-BEER [2337] Who can review a beer after one chug? In all fairness here is the review a six pack later: Of the nearly thousand texts found on the banks of the Dead Sea only one contained the recipes for an ancient beverage served in the temples of Jerusalem. The people would brew this sacred kosher drink in secrecy, hidden away in caves out of the sight of the Roman guard. Shmaltz Brewing Company’s He’Brew Messiah Bold is not this legendary brew. Messiah Bold is a brown ale that pours a rich, reddish-brown and smells slightly of molasses. The head is very light and watery but stays considerably longer than its carbonation implies. It tastes primarily of brown sugar and is overwhelmingly sweet. This wouldn’t be an issue if it weren’t for the metallic taste that immediately follows. It was about as off-putting as gefilte fish. I may not be a mensch, but you’d have to be meshuggina to serve this beer alone. It could be all right with some holishkes or a nice pastrami to counter the sweetness. Just don’t crack this one if you need a pick-me-up on the shabbat. 2/5
