Carancho: Cleve Film Fest Review

“Carancho” is a fast paced dramatic thriller with enough unconventional elements to standout among other films of its kind. Argentine director Pablo Trapero successfully grabs your attention early on and never lets go. Sosa is an ambulance chasing lawyer that works for a sleazy company which takes advantage of those involved in traffic accidents. Referred to by most as a vulture who swoops down and snatches up his clients at their most vulnerable, Sosa is a likeable enough anti-hero that over time you get the feeling cares more for the victims rather than the money he makes off of them. When he falls for drug-addicted medic Lujan, Sosa second guesses his career and attempts to break free. Can Sosa finish one last case before leaving the game for good or will he fall deeper and deeper in with every move? Ricardo Darin, who some may recognize from the Oscar-winning film “The Secret in Their Eyes” and the brilliant “The Aura”, is sensational as usual. Sadly, actress and producer Martina Gusman, while good in her role as Lujan, doesn’t have much to work with here. The picture was Argentina’s official selection for the Best Foreign Language Film category at this year’s Academy Awards and rightfully so it wholeheartedly earns the honor. The mood of “Carancho” is grim, which works to its advantage and creates a constant edge-of-your-seat atmosphere until its final shocking reel. (In Spanish with English Subtitles)
