Bewildering and strangely beautiful, “Uncle Boonmee Who Recalls His Past Lives” is unlike any film you will see all year. Those expecting a film with some form of narrative should probably check their coats at the door, however, those with a deep appreciation of blissful and moving filmmaking should find plenty to love about this picture. Uncle Boonmee is suffering from kidney failure and in a final attempt to bond with his loved ones gathers them all in the countryside of Thailand to recall his past. Over the course of the film, Uncle Boonmee and his family are visited by ghosts from their past which in turn help them understand their place in this world in both life and death. World renowned Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul has once again crafted an exceptional piece of filmmaking that defies conventional storytelling in favor of a unique and masterful film experience you are likely not to forget. Haunting as it is engaging, “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” will leaving you in puzzlement by film’s end, which will only lead audience members to want to watch it again immediately to gain not only more understanding but also to discover more to love about the film.
