Cloon: Mostly Harmless

The bizarre Belgian alternative metal band Cloon is releasing their debut album “Mostly Harmless” soon. Cloon’s abnormal style probably won’t appeal to a mainstream audience but they’ll probably find the right crowd among fans of odd, quirky metal. They have a bit of the Alex Harvey band’s jazzy funk rock, Green Jello’s dark comedic metal and Tom Morello’s off-the-wall guitar solos. The album has a few disturbing moments, though. In the song “Halftooth” a reporter calls a woman and asks a series of disturbing questions about her recently dead son. The questions range from asking if he listened to loud music to asking if he ever danced on the kitchen table naked covered in peanut butter with a broomstick up his ass. The song reaches David Lynch levels of horror when the music drones on in a hostile distorted tone and the reporter finally hints that the son might possibly have been the antichrist. Then there is horror that is “The Doll”. Even though the music on the track sounds nice and funky, the lyrics deal with a man who failed to save his daughter from drowning making this the most unsettling song on the album and a strong contender for the most disturbing song of all time. The bottom line is Mostly Harmless’s funky metal sound is pretty solid and fans of weird heavy metal and macabre humor will get a kick out of it but it’s probably not going to get much radio play in the states. However, another album or so and Cloon could become a household name among metal fans. Written By Kyle Berg
