Ready to art battle? The second and last semifinal round of the Massillon Art Battle takes place TONIGHT, June 29 at 8 p.m. at Bender’s in downtown Massillon. The round pits previous round winners Jason Sigala and Mike Skaggs against one another. Buzzbin caught up with Skaggs the day of his fight. Skaggs only recently got back into painting on a regular basis, as his time at the University of Akron was spent learning graphic design. “Rainbow Robot”, the painting he created during his first battle, is a little out of his comfort zone because most of his artwork is horror based. He and a friend have an online business, Shock Studios, where Skaggs sells his artwork. “I make a variety of masks [latex and fiberglass], zombie dolls I call ‘Zombuddies,’ and I have a large variety of zombie prints where we have taken original photos and created post apocalyptic zombie images,” Skaggs said. Skaggs knows how to work with different types of media, an important skill in a competition with time and media limitationss. His odd sense of humor can also take his art in unexpected directions. Skaggs likes the idea of having a random topic to work from, forcing him to think about a subject he doesn’t usually work with — but a part of him still hopes that the topic of this round will be horror-themed. “I’ll own that,” he said. Come see Skaggs face off against Sigala tonight at 8 p.m. at Benders in downtown Massillon. The battle is totally free to attend.
