Written off in the states by many as an AC/DC clone in the early 80s, Scandinavia (there is DEFINITELY something in the water there) and Krokus strike again with “Hoodoo.” Yeah, a lot of it does sound like AC/DC. Well, okay, basically all of it. All original members are back and it shows. As the title suggests, there’s a hit of southern rock flavor to this. The true crime is a song like “Hoodoo Woman” is a thousand times better than anything the ridiculous reincarnation of Lynyrd Skynard has ever done, and Krokus is from Scandinavia and named after a flower! They cover “Born to Be Wild,” which isn’t bad but unnecessary. It is tradition, though as they’ve also covered “School’s Out,” “American Woman” and their biggest U.S. hit “Ballroom Blitz.” It works in Europe where the band makes all their bucks so who am I to argue? The best tracks here are the motorin’ “Drive It In,” the very hooky “Too Hot,” the bad boy boogie of “In My Blood,” and the straight Angus and Co. rip-off “Shot of Love.” (AC/DC did a song called “Shot of Love” on “The Razor’s Edge” as well, and the chorus line can’t help but be close.) Just like with bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and The Ramones, there is definitely AC/DC-core, too. Krokus’ advantage in that is they (and Rose Tattoo) did it before anyone else did. And in some instances, they shine just as brightly as the original article. 8/10 – B.J. Lisko
