Review — The Depths, “Nightlife”

The Depths Nightlife Featuring ex-members of The Devotees, The Depths EP “Nightlife” is a pop/jazz fusion of sorts highlighted by solid vocal melodies, quirky lyrics and a wry wit. It’s only five songs (hence the no number rating at the end which is reserved for full-lengths or 7-songs or longer), but is a good introduction to a band that should mold itself quite well into the, pardon the pun, depths of indie rock bliss. It’s a more melancholy version of Electric Touch, or a more credible version of Plain White T’s, which in this day and age, is much better. When songs go slow and emotional here, they obviously lose some punch, but are well put together, and quite dramatic nonetheless. It remains to be seen what the band will bring to the live show (they play Dec. 27 @ Cedars), but if “Nightlife” is any indication of where the band is headed, hipsters heed notice. You may just have your saviors, and in Youngstown of all places. (Download it for free at thedepths.bandcamp.com) – B.J. Lisko
