There ain’t a white girl around that could belt like Candye Kane without having a reason for it and this girl definitely has plenty. Whether it’s being the spokesperson for the outcast or being a teenaged mother, a pin up girl, a cancer survivor or a punk blues singer, Candye Kane has had her fair share. And it’s left her with so much soul that this white girl can really belt the blues.
This album is filled with just the blues and there couldn’t be a better artist for this genre than Candye Kane. She’s got the voice, she’s got the soul and the songs she helped write for her newest album, “Sister Vagabond,” are amazing.
One song that really sits with you long after it’s done is the eerie “Walkin’, Talkin’ Haunted House” which was inspired by the ghosts of relationships past and Disneyland’s Haunted House. Kane and co-writer and guitarist Laura Chavez work together to create one eerily mournful song that really haunts you.
Frankly, this entire album is an amazing collection of all that’s right about blues and what’s amazing about Candye Kane. It’s hard trying to single out any one high point when it’s all great. Her lyrics are amazing, thoughtful and easy to relate to. Laura Chavez’s guitar is a wailing callback to Kane’s outstanding vocals. And each track can get you singing, dancing and wondering why Kane hasn’t gotten more praise yet.
This album gets you to think, gets you to feel and certainly gets you to wail the blues by the last track.
