Sex Pistols bassist and former Pulse cover boy Glen Matlock returns with his band, the Philistines, and a new record “Born Running.” Between the occasional payday with the Pistols and moonlighting as bassist of the reformed Faces, Matlock found time to hit the studio to lay down his most solid release to date. “Born Running” slams out of the gate with a British power-pop vibe, as does “Get What We Get,” which is the most soaring track on the record. “Timebomb” and “Nowheresville” compliment an effort that truly doesn’t carry a bad tune. Matlock, as with the rest of the Pistols, could never work his way out of the iconic shadow the Pistols cast in the late 70s. But if it was ever given a fair shake, “Born Running” would be about as close as any of them could get. — B.J. Lisko
