Sonic Youth would not exist without its core – Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. While others members have come and gone over the last 30 years of the band’s existence, the husband and wife duo has always been the key to holding Sonic Youth together. Now word has come through that Moore and Gordon have called its splitsville, which in effect has placed the legendary indie rockers in limbo.
Gordon and Moore announced in a statement that they are separating after 27 years of marriage but will continued with a planned Sonic Youth South American tour in November. The press release goes on to state that, “plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.”
So what will eventually happen to the band that many believe have had one of the largest influences on the alternative rock scene the last three decades? The South American tour includes stops in Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Chile, and Brazil. But who knows what will follow after that.
Sonic Youth’s 2009′s The Eternal, may also be there 16th and final release as well.
During their time together, Gordon and Moore gave birth to a daughter named Coco. Now 17-years-old, Coco has followed in the footsteps of her parents and is a member of the band Big Nils, who have released their debut album, Sibling, this past June.
Though never a mainstream success, Sonic Youth made a name for themselves in the early 90s with the release of Goo and its follow-up Dirty, both breakouts in the alternative music scene, which paved the way for what they have become today.
