First R.E.M. officially calls it quits, and now the heart of Sonic Youth splits in two. Have the alternative (or indie, or however we describe them now) rock gods forsaken us!? Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon have been married for 27 years. Sonic Youth has been together for 30. Now, in an official press release, the two have decided to end their marriage and the fate of one independent rock’s most iconic bands is yet to be decided. Their rep from Matador Records followed up the press release with this statement:

“Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.”

It’s always a shame when a long-term relationship ends, but let’s hope the band is able to survive. At least until they play one more show in Youngstown.
