Martha Marcy May Marlene (limited)
Haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, a damaged woman struggles to rejoin her family after fleeing an abusive cult. Winner of the U.S. Directing Award for Best Drama at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, “Martha Marcy May Marlene” is sure to make the critics’ best-of lists come award season.
The Skin I Live In (limited)
Based on Thierry Jonquet’s novel “Mygale,” “The Skin I Live In” is director Pedro Almodóvar’s first film with former regular Antonio Banderas in 21 years. Described as Almodóvar’s take on a horror story, the film follows a plastic surgeon traumatized by tragedies from this past, who uses a mysterious woman as his test subject and the key to his obsession. “The Skin I Live In” should be part of the select few come Oscar talk at year’s end.
Jack and Jill
Jack is a successful advertising executive with a beautiful family, but things turn upside down when his needy twin sister, Jill, shows up for Thanksgiving. Adam Sandler playing both Jack and Jill is a recipe for disaster, though a cameo of Al Pacino as himself could save this otherwise by-the-books comedy.
Immortals
In an attempt to rekindle the success of the blockbuster “300,” its producers return with “Immortals.” The film tells the story of Theseus, a mortal man chosen by Zeus to lead the fight against the ruthless King Hyperion, who is seeking a weapon that is said to have the power to destroy humanity. Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke and John Hurt star.
J. Edgar
Clint Eastwood hopes to once again score Oscar gold with “J. Edgar.” Leonardo DiCaprio takes on the hefty task of portraying the infamous FBI director in this biopic by “Milk” screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. Eastwood and Black tackle his life behind closed doors, which sheds light on things that could have destroyed his image, his career and his life. Another Academy Award frontrunner. Naomi Watts and Armie Hammer also star.
11-11-11
Darren Lynn Bousman, director of a handful of the “Saw” films, again takes on the horror genre with “11-11-11.” Set at 11:11 on the 11th day of the 11th month, the film is about an entity from another world that enters the earth through Heaven’s 11th gate. (P.S. The release date’s not a coincidence.)
