Technological innovations (and the accompanying price hike) have made 3D technology standard among action-y movies intent on boosting ticket sales, but rarely do they actually justify that third dimension. I usually drop my plastic glasses in their cardboard recycling bin after the movie feeling far less entertained than if I’d just caught a regular two-D flick with decent acting.
But there are exceptions: “Jackass 3D,” which flung dildos and shit at its audience with nearly unprecedented glee. And “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” the third installation of the ragtag stoner franchise that began in 2004. ’Tis the season to be jolly — and what better way to bring joy to audiences than to fling eggs, create ambient clouds of marijuana smoke and show Danny Trejo ejaculating onto a Christmas tree, all in three glorious dimensions?
As “Christmas” opens, a pudgy, bearded Kumar (Kal Penn) is facing the holidays alone with his bong — he’s estranged from Harold (John Cho), now a professional with a suburban house and a wife with a hard-to-please family. That changes when Kumar receives a mysterious package for Harold on his apartment doorstep, prompting a reluctant reunion and, inevitably, a night of just-like-old-times adventure. Charged with finding a Christmas tree by midnight, the pair, accompanied by their new, haplessly nerdy friends (Amir Blumenfeld and Thomas Lennon), embark on a quest that’s just as improbably zany and drug-filled as their initial 2004 foray for White Castle burgers. Their adventure includes a bizarre and deliciously funny Claymation sequence occasioned by too many party pills, and of course, a run-in with the secretly straight Neil Patrick Harris, who returns for another cameo.
The humor is easy but funny, and the movie hits harmonies that were missed in the second “Guantanamo Bay” effort. It’s weed, of course that brings the pair together — and it’s a peculiarly touching ending as the two toke up and celebrate their friendship. God bless us, every one.
