Marvel Comic’s upcoming movie, The Avengers, is the definition of spectacle movie. If everything goes as planned, it will be to superhero movies as Titanic was to romantic comedies.
We unveiled a two minute trailer back in October that showed a little bit of the group dynamics we can look forward to from the leading man (and woman – in the unfortunate singular) explosion fest that will be The Avengers. Tony Stark’s (Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr.) retort to Captain America (Chris Evans) is genuinely funny, and something that could only spring out of a comic book world.
Since that clip, the marketing geniuses at Marvel have done something just plain mean and leaked a trailer of a trailer. For the last month, fan-boys and -girls have been poring over fifteen seconds of frames, trying to figure out what would be next.
They had to watch football to find out. During the Super Bowl, the full minute trailer was unleashed. It may be shorter than the earlier trailer, but it gives us a taste of something the other doesn’t – the hero shot. The hero shot is the money shot of super hero cinema. It is the hero, poised to take on the evil villain or die trying. Except this time, it’s a pile of heroes. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner, who was absent from the first trailer) are circled up on the streets of what just might be Cleveland. Best Line Award again goes to Robert Downey Jr.
