Say what you want about Ohio, but I think that the most raw, creative talent comes from being stuck underneath these dead grey skies. On my way to, and from, Columbus, I listened to The In-Sect. It was a nine song long burnt copy by an alternative hip-hop group from Canton, Ohio. Track one, “Unravelin”, does such with confident ease and
gradual momentum. Cerebral visuals and distinct messages ooze with passion and tru’istic waves of color and contemplation. Gradually, each song brings heartfelt meaning that is in common with the artistic drive of man. There is a nice tension between word pronunciation and musical harmonies that complement each other well.
Tracks two and three, “Thru The Air” and “Lanterns” provide a unique touch of sound with good flow, breaks, and overall balance quality. “Lanterns” has the sincerity of a suave Eminem with a hint of Bone Thugs, though more cosmic, in the making. The In-Sect is reflective and contemplative, with a cool and calm beat, yet progressively encompassing. They bring you into the “in-sect-ual” zone with a swarm of creeping melody and good poetic flow. The In-Sect show purpose and intent with their lyrical composition that press firmly into the groove of each track. “So I shake the curse, by spitting spells in reverse”…
A tribal influence is evident in “Priest of Nothingness” and “Hemophiliacs” by the use of what seems to be Native American ‘nature calls’. There is an inherent theme that incorporates all elements of nature in the music. “Hemisphers” enters a twinkling cosmic entity by piano notes. “D.O.W.N” has nice overall vocal presence and subconscious poetry. Bass, message, and flow are all active parts that provide an underlying psychic force-field to the existence of The In-Sect. Their music motivates me to hone in on my own inner poet. Look out!!!
