Checking in at CIFF: Nana

Ever wonder what goes through the mind of a four-year old when you’re not around? First-time director Valerie Massadian explores the inner workings of an adorable child without the watchful eye of an adult in her feature-length debut, Nana. Capturing a few days with and without a guardian by her side, the director brilliantly crafts our journey with an incredibly independent girl, who seems to make due on her own regardless of her mother disappearing one day from the lonely countryside shack they both inhabit. Artist/photographer Massadian perfectly weaves a tale of child innocence and the cruelty of everyday life in a film that is sure to move the hearts of those fortunate enough to see it. The fantastical mind of child actor Kelyna Lecomte as Nana will also have you grinning cheek to cheek throughout the surprisingly short run time of the film. As we follow Nana mimicking the daily routine of her mother on the beautiful landscapes of a French farmstead, we lose ourselves in the moment and get the feeling that everything will be okay because we, as viewers, our right there by her side. Nana will have its final showing on Monday, March 26 at 8:20PM. (In French with English subtitles)
