Dan Cummins at the Auricle this Saturday!

Dan Cummins

“I saw a grown man once riding one of those weird standup scooters down the side of the road — you have to tilt to make it move forward, I think it’s called a Segway or a Douchebag Way — wearing a toga and holding a sign for a pizza sale,” comedian Dan Cummins recounts in one of his standup routines. “My first thought was, ‘Congrats, you’ve hit rock bottom.’ But my second thought was, ‘If you took away just the sign, then that guy would rule.’” Meandering, abstracted and at times, a little bizarre, the comedic stylings of Dan Cummins has made him a huge hit among the 18-to-35 crowd who loves his take on American absurdity. This Saturday, you can catch the lank, brooding funnyman in Canton when he comes to the Auricle for a standup set. The NEO show is part of a string of national headlining appearances for Cummins that stretch from Maine to Alaska. Cummins has performed his standup on “The Tonight Show,” “The Late, Late Show, “Last Comic Standing” and a number of Comedy Central specials. His first comedy album, “Revenge is Near,” was ranked among the top 10 comedy CDs of 2009 by Punchline Magazine. That same year, his Comedy Central Presents performance came in third in Comedy Central’s annual Standup Showdown, and the network bought the rights to air a one-hour special. The resulting performance, “Crazy With A Capital F,” became his second album, released in 2010. Both albums debuted on Billboard Comedy Charts’ top 10 in addition to a slew of year-end top-ten roundups — including iTunes Rewind’s Best Comedy CDs. Cummins has since appeared on G4’s “The International Sexy Ladies Show” (though let’s face it, you didn’t watch it for the comedy). His standup career has even attracted the attention of filmmaker Mike Newman, who is currently filming a documentary on the comedian. The 18-and-over show starts at the Auricle (601 Cleveland Ave. NW, Canton) at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 31; doors open at 7. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door, those ages 18 to 20 must pay a $2 surcharge at the door. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.theauricle.net or call 330-353-8694.
