If Etsy had a love child with Bonnaroo, this would be it.
In its 20th year, Canton’s Art Is Alive Festival on April 13 and 14 combines handmade, original art with eclectic musical performances at what festival planners call an indie art show that’s a bit of a sale and a whole lot of a party.
Want to see a belly-dancing drum circle or listen to a synthesized folk-rock band? How about dabbling in the Victorian futuristic with a piece of handmade steampunk jewelry?
Oh, and lest we forget, designs by Project Runway designer Valerie Mayen, a.k.a. Yellowcake, will be present, and you just might walk away with one of her latest offerings.
Forty-four artistic vendors will offer everything from clothing, jewelry and beaded items to letterpress, felt dolls, photography and pottery in the heart of the Cultural Center for the Arts in downtown Canton.
The fest was founded in 1992 by Deloris Angeli, owner of the Plant Et Art shop on Fulton Avenue and an independent arts advocate, as a wild, one-night celebration of arts and music. Arts in Stark took over in 2010, and this year organizers have themed the event “Not for the Faint of Art,” with a heart-monitor logo and staff dressed in hospital scrubs.
Musical acts will provide entertainment on both the Pegasus Stage in the main hall and the Cable Recital Hall stage (where Akron’s White Pines is slated to wrap things up Friday night).
“I’m a huge fan of local artists getting together and making something happen, so I’m proud to be a part of something that helps that along,” said lead singer Joseph Pines.
The Recital Hall stage will share a room with café seating and food and beverage vendors. Papa Gyros will be on hand to dish out fare Friday night and Saturday will feature barbecue beef, hot dogs and other fair food.
Admission is $2 and good for both days, including free parking. Ticket proceeds go directly to sponsoring Arts in Stark’s educational outreach program for schools, SmArts.
The festival will take place Friday, April 13, from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, April 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.artisalive.com.
