Dirty hands and knee pads are a given at this month’s First Friday, as Chalk the Walk returns to the streets on June 1 from 6-10 p.m. in the Canton Arts District. Twenty teams of artists, including Jeff Keirn’s infamous Chalk Monkeys, will be on the loose and running wild with ideas that range from the surreal to the sublime. In addition, the Julliard Arts Center hosts a Battle of the Chalk at Motter & Meadows, across from the Canton Palace Theatre, that will show the free family film, “The Lorax,” at 7:30. Around the corner, at Lynda Tuttle’s Art Center, the group Retro Rock Band will be the backdrop to chalk dancing, while Art District newbie, Lou Lou in Hollywood, offers complimentary hair chalking.
Other notable newcomers include Basil, the Asian-inspired restaurant, and its Market Avenue neighbor, B Side Wine House, where sax man Denny Ott will be performing. Arcadia features music by Take 3 while The Canton Club tunes in to Tim Baley on the baby grand from 6-8 and John Markovic on guitar from 8-11. Tim Griffiths strums and sings outside Gasser Jewelers while the 2012 Canton Idols lead the Motter & Meadows parking lot line-up followed by The Scenic Route at 7 p.m., White Sky Outcast at 8 p.m., and Hot Mess at 9 p.m.
Be drawn to Elvis when he shakes, rattles and rolls as First Friday sponsor, Stark Community Foundation, presents “Positively Fourth Street” at their location on 4th Street NE between Piedmont and Market. And don’t miss the Ryan Humbert Listening Party, with special guest Tracey Thomas, inside Buzzbin Art & Music Store (4th and Cleveland) and benefiting Project Rebuild.
Outside, the First Friday main stage will kick it with dancing by Mariah Studio and Andrew Fulmer Dance Studio, tunes by OrangeOK Band and 9:30 p.m. headliner, Oh Tear the Veil, winner of the 2012 Battle of the Bands. While there, stop by the First Friday info tent to pick up your “scratch and win” card to claim up to $20 in cash after showing a receipt from making a $20 or more purchase from one of the galleries or studios, including Translations, where Rhode Island artist Rich Pellegrino brings his talents with an exhibit called Resuscitatorum, putting a new spin on sleeping beauties. Then cross the street to Second April, hosts of the Jackson High School AP Art Show. See collage artist, Gail Wetherell-Sack at Julz; or visit Journey Art Gallery featuring painting and prints of musicians; while making your way to Elemental Arts on Walnut where owners Domenica Sanchez and John Strauss will have new work for sale.
