FREEZER HOPS: BEER, MEET ICE CREAM

2012

It’s Ohio in July, which means it’s hotter and stickier than a syrup fight in hell. Some days, those fourteen Twisted Teas just don’t cut it. Fortunately for the craft-brew set, the latest craze is beer-flavored ice creams, made not (as we thought and hoped) by trading shots with dairy cows but by blending brews with the frozen treat. Here are a few. – Molly Lehman
RIGGS, RUM AND RAISIN — BLACK SHEEP BREWERY
This Yorkshire, U.K. brewery joined forces with local ice-cream manufacturer Brymor to make an ice cream infused with their rich Riggwelter brew. Brymor’s dairy comes from pedigree Guernsey cows (you know how beer snobs can get), and according to the brewery, “it perfectly complements the distinctive dark fruit and roasted malt flavours of Riggwelter.” Sign us up. www.blacksheepbrewery.com
PEACH LAMBIC — FROZEN PINTS
This U.S.-based startup didn’t even bother starting with a brewery first — they specialize in making only beer ice cream, ranging from light to dark. On one end of the spectrum is the Peach Lambic, a juicy twist on peach ice cream that delivers a boozy, champagne-like hit. Others include a spiced Pumpkin Ale ice cream and the classic Vanilla Bock, with Madagascar vanilla and the scent of cloves. www.frozenpints.com
TEN PENNY BEER NUT PARFAIT — THE BREWER’S COW
For only $12, The Brewer’s Cow will ship pints of their creations anywhere in the country. That includes the Ten Penny Beer Nut Parfait, a bizarre and tasty twist on bar fare that combines Ten Penny Ale with beer nuts, fudge and caramel. It’s as though someone gave a stoner the keys to a creamery and access behind the bar. The site also recommends (and sells a kit for) Guinness floats, made with the stout and scoops of their Guinness-infused ice cream. www.thebrewerscow.com
