Epic. Creepy. Shudder. Awe. Art that comes from the deepest disturbed part of the mind. It makes you uncomfortable, but you can’t stop staring. You can’t stop, because it’s so real and so true. On Aug. 11, “The Akron Artrocity” promises to send you to a whole new dimension of art, featuring artists known for their counterculture work. Morbidity and political themes abound. Zombies too, because you can’t have an eerie culture experience without the chant for “braaaaaains” in the background.
Shawn Coss, known for his sinister, demonic art, is curating his first, but not last, art show hosted by Akron’s Empire Ink. “I like to create art that makes people uncomfortable,” he said. “It pushes them and gets them really immersed in the message I’m trying to convey.”
Coss has pulled together 12 artists who all explore humankind’s darker side in their media. The stunning lineup features Scott Versago, Audrey Smart, Ian Burleson, Amonte Littlejohn, Jimi Jackson, Jason Hager, John Pinkerton, Andy Dreamingwolf, Brandon Smith, Steve Ehret, Logan Thyr and Coss.
DJ Donnie Demonic will be pounding the beats while you fill up on some free grub and look at art all day. Fight, or don’t fight, the impulse to go under the needle wielded by one of Empire Ink’s acclaimed tattoo artists. Enter in raffles for prizes such as gift certificates to Empire Ink, artwork and more. The grand prize will be a large blank canvas ready for all 12 artists to paint, draw or decimate after the show.
All proceeds from the raffle will be given to local animal shelters, so buy tickets in good conscience and save the puppies and kittens. This all-ages show goes from noon to 11 p.m., with no cover charge.
