The Bare Facts on DR. Sketchy: a Q&A with DR. Sketchy Model “Z”

What in the hell is Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School? Good question. Dr. Sketchy is a night where you, as an artist, or a novice can have the opportunity to break away from a “normal” figure model setting. It takes place in a bar/lounge, [and] I could just stop there and it would already sound awesome, but once you add a half-naked woman and prizes how could you go wrong? Can you explain what the “alt.drawing” movement is? I certainly can. It’s an alternative to life drawing in that it adds alcohol, music and sex to what otherwise is a formal training exercise. So, you’re saying that anyone, no matter what skill level, can attend Dr. Sketchy’s, enjoy a libation, and draw a beautiful, scantily clad woman? I think you just answered your own question in the question. And that is absolutely! You don’t need skill to have fun. It’s great coming to meet new friends and fellow artists. Even if you’ve never drawn before it’s never too late to learn. And I couldn’t think of a better place to start. How did you get into modeling, and what is it about Dr. Sketchy’s that made you willing to get on stage and model for complete strangers? I’ve been modeling since I was 16. Runway, magazines, catalogs, etc. I started modeling for artists about five years ago and have loved it ever since. It takes a great level of discipline to remain perfectly still for up to 40 minutes at a time. Plus, I’m really outgoing and the opposite of shy, so the whole “strangers” aspect I find irrelevant. Do you draw? I do! I’m a photographer and painter. As for painting I’ve only been [painting] for about two years, but I thank my mom for giving me some of her talent. I have pieces at Jack Richards Studio on Front Street and also Devilstrip Dolly’s, which got voted “Best Thing to Happen to Akron in 2012.”
