Back in 2005, before Midge Ramone was in kindergarden, she and her sister's indie-pop band, ShiSho, wrote and recorded, "Get Behind Me Santa," a comedy song inspired by the White Stripes project du jour, "Get Behind Me Satan." Little did they know, this funny ditty would earn them a recording deal with England's Filthy Little Angels Records, rotation on BBC radio and attention from Pitchfork and the Sufjan Stephen's camp. Seven years have passed and ShiSho's Vivian and Midge Ramone have found their single's sleeve art published in a new book titled, "Covered: Classic Sleeves and Their Im...

Troubadour Blues is a journey into the world of well-traveled singer-songwriters like Peter Case, Mary Gauthier, Chris Smither, Dave Alvin, Slaid Cleaves and many more. Filmmaker Tom Weber spent nearly 10 years gathering material for this feature-length documentary, which provides a revealing look at the heartbreaks and joys of these modern-day wandering minstrels. The 95-minute film premiered Oct. 14, 2011, at the Buffalo International Film Festival. It features live performances of 40 songs by the artists who wrote them, including Case's "Icewater" and "Entella Hotel," Gauthier's "Drag Qu...

“They start the high school football season too damned early,” I said to my wife, as we drove home after Ellet clobbered her alma mater, Springfield. “Sweating” while participating in the sacred Friday night tradition just doesn’t seem right. I feel the same about pumpkin beers. Love ‘em. But most are already out before the Labor Day weekend. So, if you’re already bored with gourds, here’s a few quality libations from some brewers who have gone out of their way to avoid the large orange orb, to both provide a salve after a 63-6 humiliation and help pass the time between the ...

Very few musicians can claim they've influenced the genre their music belongs to. Even fewer can claim their music altered said genre within the short time frame of a few albums. Pop music had Michael Jackson, hip-hop had Dr. Dre — for grindcore it's Pig Destroyer. As many grind fans will tell you, Pig Destroyer may not have started the grind movement but they certainly made it into what it is today — fast, brutal and scary. Reasons like these are why a band like Pig Destroyer can wait five years to release an album and still have fans chomping at the bit. Pig Destroyer's long-awaited f...

By Rory Axelrod Canton punk trio Yet To Define is a dystopian train run free, careening on derailment as it threatens to leave a trail of nihilistic destruction through the countryside. The group sounds as if the Dead Kennedys grew up during the early '90s and seeped into the hardcore scene of the time, picking up on band's like Hammerhead, Fugazi and its predecessor, Minor Threat. Music for the sake of playing and being a part of something. “Music should be about loyalty and the love of music,” said Adam Miller, the band's frontman and guitar player. “It shouldn't be about money an...

Good literature and good theater generally focus on a character with whom everyone can identify. Often, it’s just an ordinary person, tossed into extraordinary circumstances — the “everyman.” This is the character that inspired Lake Worth, Florida, band The EVERYMEN, who connect with the everyman in the audience not just through their music and performances, but also on a personal level. The individual band members represent a broad spectrum of humanity in their backgrounds and personalities. But The EVERYMEN were born on, let’s say, the wrong side of the tracks. Banjo playe...

“Stagecoach Robbery” doesn’t sound entirely out of place when associated with Tuscarawas County, which name is derived from a Native American word. Stagecoach robberies might well have been an issue, in fact, in Tuscarawas County early in its recorded history, since the Delaware Indians who lived there, while friendly with the Moravian settlers, had to ally with the French during the French and Indian War, then come under British rule following the Treaty of Paris, then fight to keep their land during and following the Revolutionary War until they were forced west of the Mississippi. Bu...

By Rory Axelrod “Pipefitters, Porn and PBR,” a new exhibit by Northeast Ohio artist John Puglia, explores the world of the pipefitters in Akron's rubber plants during the '70s and '80s. While fondly reminisced about as the “good ol' days” when jobs were plentiful and the American Dream seemed obtainable, this was also a time of hard work in tough conditions. Unbeknownst to most, this grind-'em-up mentality of the work developed a sort of tick in the employees, a need for escape — not just from their jobs, but perhaps also their families, homes and real life. For the city's pipe...
