Esben and the Witch Although just a few years old, this English band has put a lot of miles on the old tour bus. They were signed last year by Matador Records and joined the ranks with heavy weights like Sonic Youth, Interpol and Belle & Sebastian. Impressive. Their sound is experimental and gothic. Intrigued? ...

Through March 5 — Jose Sacaridiz — Nocturne & Estrus Group Show STUDIO 2091 (2091 Front Street, Cuyahoga Falls) From ancient myth to Harry Potter, the look of the nocturnal owl holds an enduring place in the human imagination. In some cultures they are revered; in others, feared. And for every superstition that associates owls with good fortune, a dozen more link them to mortality, sickness or evil. The artist José Paul Sacaridiz presents a small sample of some of the hundreds of species that evoke these legends, customs and beliefs in this interpretive series of 25 original han...

By Julia Kazar Lydia Loveless might only be 19, but she sings as if she’s already experienced a great deal of life. She recently released her debut album and fans and critics alike are impressed. Loveless hails from Columbus, Ohio and regularly plays gigs at Annabell’s Bar & Lounge in Akron, but her twangy country voice seems like it could be more at home playing shows in the deep south. No matter where she is playing, Loveless manages to charm the crowd. A performer since she was a young child, Loveless is well prepared for the success that is sure to lie ahead with mu...
By: Julia Kazar If you were lucky enough to be at the Clay’s Park Rock N' Resort Music Festival on Saturday then you know just how incredible the Theory Of A Deadman show was. After a full day of tribute and original rock bands, and Hoobastank, the crowd at Clay’s Park was in the mood to rock. Saturday was the second day of rock music, sun and beer drinking for many members of the audience, but if they were tired in any way, they didn’t show it. The show was packed with energy, both from the band and the crowd. The sun had set and it had cooled off a little bit by 9:30 wh...
Despite a few technical problems during the beginning of Friday night's show, The Woovs still rocked out Akron's own Key West, The Harbor Inn. Special friend of the band and former employee at the Harbor Inn, Renee Kintz, opened the show. She played barefoot, and her soulful voice had the audience whistling for more even with the microphone screeching throughout her performance. Before performing a song about mistakes, Kintz said, "Mistakes are fun to make." But singer Adam Lengyel of The Woovs didn't seem to think the technical mistakes from the sound booth were fun. During their boxi...

By Julia Kazar Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are known for their unique style of rock and roll music, but when they set out to make his latest album they decided to do things a little differently. Instead of following the formula that has worked for the band for years, a mix of heartland rock and catchy pop, they went with a more country and blues inspired theme, and it might not have been the best choice for them. Credit where credit is due though, this album was recorded mostly live. Luckily, Tom Petty, and all the Heartbreakers are incredibly talented musicians so what came out wa...
The aptly titled "Recovery" aims to be Eminem's redemption, his first "sober" album. The results are predictable. He's not young anymore. He's 37, and the album reflects his urge to grow up and inability to shake his sometimes juvenile behavior. He's still pushing cultural taboos to their limit, such as ripping on Michael J. Fox on "Cold Wind Blows," or a duet with Rihanna about domestic violence where she sings "That's alright because I like the way it hurts." He also rips on autotune in "Cold Wind Blows," then uses it 7 tracks later at the beginning of "Seduction." But lyrically...
By E.M. Serensky On Tuesday, June 15th, Wakey! Wakey!, the New York City based indie rock/pop band will be gracing the House of Blues in the Cambridge Room. They will be joined by the Spring Standards, an up and coming group with a lot of soul. Wakey! Wakey! consists of Mike Grubbs on lead vocals & piano, Anne Lieberwith on bass, Tanya Buziak on backing vocals, Patrick Doane on violin, and Max Tucker on drums. Together these individuals merge to create an ensemble that overflows with fun, dynamics, and musical talent. Wakey!Wakey! is mostly Grubbs' thing. Inspired by and a p...
It's hard to say anything bad about supergroup The Dead Weather. Made up of notorious guitarist Jack White, Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, and Jack Lawrence of the Raconteurs, the group has combined their unequivocal talents to create a monster of an album, Sea of Cowards, released May 11 by Third Man Records. Although the album consists of 11 tracks, it's relatively short. The tracks average about 3 minutes and the album itself is only about 35 minutes long. But it's so jam-packed with different styles and funky riffs that it's easy to listen to ...
Faux brothers Tom Rowland and Ed Simons will release their seventh studio album "Further" on June 14th. The innovators of electronica will also be releasing films to accompany the music, working with visual artists Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall for the complete mind-blowing experience. The duo seems to have found a formula for their music, a rubric of space, bass, buildup and breakdown. They create a psychedelic experience as they guide the listener on a journey through their eight-track landscape. The slow repetitive beat on the opening track "Snow" is consistent with the opening ...

The Big Sweet Shot of Bliss Shot of Bliss is the debut album from The Big Sweet, three sophomores at Jackson High School and a cousin from Cleveland. Don’t mind their ages though – these guys are rubbing elbows with bands from before they were born and have obviously logged a lot of hours in the garage (where did they find the time?!). The album opens with the fuzzy, catchy “Dress Up Your Mind” and a riff straight from the early ‘90s. Over its 10 songs, Shot of Bliss touches on a wide range of songwriting. Tracks like “Good & Down Youth”, an acoustic tune about the im...
