Colin John, an Ohio-born, Memphis-grown musician, made his name playing lead guitar at B.B. King’s Beale Street club, backing the likes of Hank Ballard and Pinetop Perkins. The Colin John Band takes blues, funk, soul and rock and twists them all into a self-proclaimed genre of “x-treme blues.” ...

Normally, it would be a cliché to call a performer multi-faceted. Not so with Rachel Brooke. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to put Brooke into any single category. Pick up her latest solo CD, “Down in the Barnyard,” and play tracks like “Meet Me By the Apple Tree,” “Don’t Forget Me When I Die” and “City of Shame,” and you’ll see the country and bluegrass side of Brooke, who lists Hank Williams and the Carter family with Johnny Cash among her musical influences. Think Loretta Lynn, with her clear voice and direct stories, with the styling of Clara Bow. But then tak...

Comprised of Brian Lake on vocals and guitar, Sayer Payne on bass and Travis Kuhlman rounding out on drums, Buildings is a forced to be reckoned with. With influences ranging from the likes of The Melvins, Unwound, Fugazi and Jesus Lizard, Buildings have constructed a unique sound all its own. Buzzbin Magazine caught up with singer Brian Lake as the Minneapolis natives prepared to head out on the road with a planned stop at Akron’s Annabell’s this Thursday. How did the formation of Buildings first come about? Travis (the drummer) and I met at a These Arms Are Snakes show. He looked me up...

Indiana glam band Black Jet Radio has been described as “Blondie meets the New York Dolls... with Cabaret inspired vocals, fuzz guitars, pulsing drums, driving bass and a touch of Lowry organs.” Add the band’s 3 to 1 female to male ratio and the PBR-swilling goodness of Annabell’s and you have a winner. ...

On a cold, dark and violent night in Lansing, Mich., three young men met each other in a face-scarring fight with a group of gangbangers at a notorious East Lansing flophouse. From the blood of that sinister evening rose the band that would become The Goddamn Gallows. Currently ravaging the country with their uniquely furious, twanged-out, punk-rock gutterbilly, The Goddamn Gallows weave and twist across the highways like a pack of demented, nomadic, musical serial killers. Watch for them on corners, clubs and city jails in your town — or, if you’re feeling daring, head to Annabell’s ...

When the Akron Deathfest rolls through Annabell’s on April 29th and 30th, it will be the third year for the newest incarnation of the concert that defines what extreme music really means. Extreme music fans may remember Akron Deathfest from the early 2000s, when it was organized by Jason Chamberlain - who started the concert because he loved death metal. It was strong in the beginning, even after it bounced from Annabell’s to the old Akron Daily Double, but ended up drying up after a few years, leaving a hole in the Northeast Ohio music scene. In 2009, Dave Burgess decided to bring i...

Halloween may still be some six months away, but that doesn't mean you can't stagger through the streets like a menacing, brain-chowing zombie. (Hell, some of us do that every Saturday!) Here's your opportunity to dress like the undead for a worthy cause: Since 2006, Akron's Zombie Walk and Festival has raised more than 5,000 pounds of food for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, a number organizers hope to increase via today's repeat event. What do the zombies get out of all this, you may ask? Besides the obvious thrill of pretending to eat your buddies' eyeballs, you can count on an afterpar...

Fillmore Jive, consisting of two psychedelic rockers, will bring their unique sound to Annabell's in Akron's Highland Square on March 26th. Formed in the spring of 2008 in Youngstown, the band has been labeled as a hybrid of Spacemen 3, Jesus and Mary Chain and The Velvet Underground. Already becoming widely known throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania, Fillmore Jive is ready to conquer the world. The two-piece has been described as one of the best and most original psychedelic bands in the area. The free show begins at 10pm with Akron bands The Hobs and Mason Dies also on the bill....

What a simple joy bowling can be. Whether it’s an afternoon trip to the lanes with the family or a night out with friends, bowling is always a welcome cure for breaking up winter monotony. Plus, it’s an activity that one doesn’t have to be very good at to enjoy. So when Akron’s The Oxnards invited me to roll a few frames at Stonehedge, I was more than happy to oblige. Their brand of manic “Talking Heads meets The Ramones” (as vocalist and guitarist Wes Cowie puts it) rock has already gained the band some loyal followers in the Akron area, helping to pack the house at recent Anna...

I have wronged Akron’s Shivering Timbers. On two separate, sigh-laden nights I watched them perform. Earlier this year I stumbled into Annabell’s after consuming what felt like half of the Matinee’s supply of Two-Hearted because Unnamed Girl A had said “blah, blah, blah…go away” a few hours earlier.  Shivering Timbers played upstairs… I remembered that much. But I couldn’t for the life of me remember what they sounded like (or walking to my friend’s house and passing out on his couch, for that matter). So, this past summer, I made it my goal to catch them at th...

By | D. BEALL She’s not guzzling whiskey, she’s not breaking hearts just yet, it’s too early in the day. Good lookin’ blonde country punk Lydia Loveless is at home in Columbus reading her paper and drinking coffee and talking to Buzzbin Magazine. Her name alone conjures up thoughts of Lyle Lovett, Loretta Lynn, Lydia Lunch, and Deep Throat’s very own Linda Lovelace (“That’s a common mistake,” she laughs). When I listen to her sound, that combination is a pretty great way to describe it. Her debut album, The Only Man, boasts songs about drinking, lost love and shoo...

By: Julia Kazar Thursday night kicked off the Brackish Water Band’s summer tour.  The first stop for the country/ bluegrass band was Annabell’s in Akron.  They played a two hour set upstairs in the lounge that was full of foot-tapping and good times.  It was a show filled to the brim with southern voices as well as sounds, and it was perfect for a summer night. If you’ve ever been to Annabell’s you know just how small the stage is upstairs, now imagine trying to squeeze four musicians and their instruments on the stage.  It’s not exactly very roomy but if the Brackish Water...

Cleveland's Lords of the Highway will share their sleazy, bawdy, rockabilly chops to Annabell's this Friday.  They will be performing with Alleycasters, with their own brand of rock/punk/psychobilly and Devil Strip, featuring members of Dropgun and Road of Sin. The Lords of the Highway have been bringing their high-energy performances to the area for about 18 years, encapsulating what a punk-hillbilly rock band should be: loud, crazy, raunchy and ready to party.  Its members (on the latest album Die, Monster, Die) are Dennis Bell on lead guitar/vocals, Joey Hissem on drums and "Sugar"...

By: Julia Kazar Like some twang with your crunch?  With a little bit of country and a little bit of rock the Brackish Water Band is heading to Annabell’s in Akron on Thursday August 5th. They will be performing on the upstairs stage. The band is ready to rock your face Hank Williams style, or something like that.  Needless to say their going to have some fun and we're going to wear ten gallon hats. Ten years ago, The Brackish Water Band formed out of the hills of Washington (state). Over the years the band has evolved into the good time country powerhouse they are today.  See th...

By: Julia Kazar On Thursday night David Gerrard played an intimate show upstairs at Annabell’s in Akron. It was nice to have such a small show because it allowed Gerrard to personally interact with everyone in the audience. He not only took requests from them, but he also was able to carry on conversations with them and make them feel like they were part of the show. Throughout the night Gerrard played a number of different songs, most of them were covers of other artists’ original songs but he did throw in a few that he had written himself too. Between songs he took the time to intr...

By Julia Kazar Musician David Gerrard has been making music for over thirty year now, an acoustic guitar player Gerrard combines his musical influences with his own personal take on folk music and ends up with a classic folk sound updated for the twenty-first century. Gerrard’s shows usually consist mostly of covers of others music, but he is constantly working on music of his own and implementing it into the show when he thinks it will fit in. But make no mistake about it David Gerrard is by no means just a cover artist, he is as dedicated to his own music as he is to recreating songs d...

It's a night of smooth, sultry music and pretty female vocalists at Annabell's on Thursday. In a basement normally filled to the brim with metalheads, one group and two solo artists keep it mellow for the small but receptive crowd. First up, Shivering Timbers deliver nursery-rhyme songs to the beat of a drum, electric guitar, stand-up bass and banjo. It all started for them when husband and wife combo Sarah and Jayson Benn had a baby. "We were always sitting around playing nursery rhymes for her," Sarah said. That turned around when they played a few of their songs for Sarah's long-time ...

It's a night of hard-rock and metal, fresh new bands and a convergence of talent. Annabell's is packed with Akron music fans getting their first glimpses of two brand new amalgamations of the Akron music scene: Duunes and Octiger, with the increasingly popular Megachurch sandwiched between them. Duunes are up first, priming the crowd with ear-splitting distortions before diving into their brand of aggressive rock. The riffs go from funky to metal, and their range keeps it interesting. The Duunes are made up of ex-members of Sofa King Killers, Six-Parts Seven, Hell's Information and Beas...
