A staple in the local pop-culture art scene, Thirteenth Floor Gallery had hosted some pretty killer exhibits and events at its previous locations in Massillon. However, gallery owner Billy Ludwig packed up his macabre and outsider art and moved it into a new location right in the heart of the Canton Art District on 4th St. “It was a rather impulsive move,” Ludwig said of the relocation. “From the initial decision, checking out the space and signing the lease — it literally all happened within a couple days. Fourth St. very quickly felt like home, not to mention the neighboring galle...

Housed in what was once Joe's Bar, the go-to location for hip Canton folk, Thatsa Wrapp does credit to the spot. Away from the rest of downtown Canton's art district (and just a few blocks from the Buzzbin office), this hidden gem is hands down one of our favorite stops in the area and should be a must for any beer connoisseur. The café offers more than 50 craft beers from an impressive bottle list, along with half a dozen taps. This time, I was drawn to the tapping of a recent favorite local beer: Columbus Brewing Company's Bodhi. Columbus has flown under the radar over the last few years...

“Iris” is a Greek word. Its meaning, “rainbow”, comes from the diverse range of colors in which irises appear. Other parts of the world compare the bloom to flags or swords, and view it as a symbol of heritage. Stylized irises appear, as fleurs-de-lis, on dozens of national flags, emblems and coats of arms. But forget that when you head to Iris Restaurant in Canton’s art district. It’s not designated that for the flower or any other symbol or historical insignia — it’s named after chef and owner Angus McIntosh’s aunt, an 80-year-old artist who plays the guitar, banjo an...

By Denver Collins First Friday The rain held off just long enough to hear some captivating new music at First Friday in Canton on the 4th. The Big Sweet, a young rock/alternative band of 15 and 16-year-olds, played a solid set in front of the Imperial Room for a crowd of wandering pedestrians and proud parents. Made up of drummer Drew Watson, bassist Matt McDonald, rhythm guitarist Brad Berbarie and lead guitarist/vocalist Sam Regas, the group shows promise and an excellent musical IQ. They cite Tom Petty, Sonic Youth, The Pixies and Wilco as major musical influences. They appear to ...

“An art show is like a big rock concert only flip flopped where the music enhances the visual presentation…” In the ever changing kaleidoscope of the art world, things like color, creativity and medium fit together into one vision. This is the eye of the artist. Limitation free and positively spirited, Bili Kribbs breathes life to the Massillon art scene. Graduating from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1998, Bili decided to change his hometown of Massillon instead of joining well established art communities on the coasts. “Why go to New York or LA and be one of many?” he ask...
