BY BEATRICE BACHLEDA FREAKY STUFF! Massillon’s Thirteenth Floor Gallery is known for its “bizarre, macabre, and disturbing artwork and shows,” owner Billy Ludwig said proudly. The Eerie Street Sideshow is no exception: The circus-themed show is a spectacle to remember and lives up to Thirteenth Floor’s reputation. On Friday, July 13 (note the eerie date) the doors will open at 6 p.m. — but don’t expect a typical gallery viewing, and don’t assume you’ll be getting out while the night is young. Discordia, a fire-breathing female cabaret who aren’t afraid to get hot will be l...

As a young skateboarder at Lake High School it was natural to look up to the older, better skaters. One of the gnarliest and most inspirational was Brian Bowes. I remember skating to his house and hanging out. Building a ramp (we thought if we soaked the wood it would bend easier), skating across town to the elementary school to shred the curb and watching as the older kids did unimaginable things like ride off a ramp and up a wall... popping off and cleanly landing on the ground and riding away. That passion and creativity we looked up to on the streets, as well as in art class is keenly on ...
I am sure we all have, at sometime, wanted to do things over again. Relationships? School? Life? Well, Billy Ludwig at Thirteenth Floor is giving some of the area's most talented artists a second chance. This Saturday, Massillon's Thirteenth Floor will be exhibiting what Ludwig has aptly titled Evolution. Each artist has been asked to take an older piece of their artwork, which should be at least five years old, and do it over again. That is the only rule, which give artists free reign to do what they want. The clever artistic experiment is a great way for artist's to give a second life...
Ready to art battle? The second and last semifinal round of the Massillon Art Battle takes place TONIGHT, June 29 at 8 p.m. at Bender’s in downtown Massillon. The round pits previous round winners Jason Sigala and Mike Skaggs against one another. Buzzbin caught up with Skaggs the day of his fight. Skaggs only recently got back into painting on a regular basis, as his time at the University of Akron was spent learning graphic design. “Rainbow Robot”, the painting he created during his first battle, is a little out of his comfort zone because most of his artwork is horror based. He and ...
ANDERSON CREATIVE (331 Cleveland Ave. NW, Canton) The deeply misunderstood sock monkey, the elegant form of Barbie and the sophisticated Mr. Potato Head — it wasn’t the craftsmanship of these toys that made them loved, but the fun they provided for millions of children. Viewers will be encouraged to return to the simplicity of childhood and play as Anderson Creative invites 20 artists to create artwork inspired by a favorite childhood toy. Take a stroll through this delightful exhibit as whimsical ceramicists, filmmakers, painters and more (14 of whom have never show in our gallery) hol...

On July 17, Billy Ludwig, artist, musician and entrepreneur, will open Massillon's first art gallery, an event celebrated with live music, lumberjack/chainsaw carving demonstrations and cold draft beer at 28 Charles Street. The street will be closed off and the music will be outside, drawing in crowds to come see the many different forms of art from some of Northeast Ohio's most talented artists. These include Shock Studios, Bili Kribbs, Scot Philips, Steve Ehret and Megan Mars to name a few. "I'm an artist myself," Ludwig says. "And working with other artists, we've been pretty agg...
On a rainy summer day at the Lockview in Akron, Rachel Jernigan runs up a tab ordering her two favorite drinks: dirty martinis and Bloody Marys. The Lockview is a small bar across from the Civic Theatre with classy beer on tap and big colorful paintings on the walls. The week before, Rachel’s art was on display there as well. “I like selling art at a bar because people aren’t normally there to buy art,” she says. She currently has artwork selling at The Zephyr, the bar in Kent where she works, as well as Akron’s We Gallery. Rachel uses spray paints and acrylics, specifica...
