BY GRAHAM BECK Back in the late '90s, there was a movement within heavy metal music that took elements of rap and hip-hop and infused them with the heaviness of metal, creating a sub-genre that stirred as much interest as it did debate. It was a movement where pseudo-psychological parental issues were as prevalent as red baseball caps and it seemed like every band had a DJ as a band member. This anomaly was referred to as nu-metal — heavy metal's cousin, twice removed. Remember nu-metal? Those funny days when band names were purposefully misspelled, putting Z’s where S’s should go? Reme...

While being no more than three years on the scene, Akron's Shivering Timbers has bloomed rapidly into one of the most touted bands from the Northeast Ohio region. Composed of husband-and-wife duo Jayson and Sarah Benn, the group's sound comprises folk-tinged indie rock that blends enough styles to make it nearly uncategorizable. The band's strength is in its ability to shift dynamically from sing-songy nursery rhymes to noisy jams that bring to mind the more cohesive compositions of Cap 'n Jazz. In between, the group dabbles between gospel, punk and blues. The band's records are truly a tes...

November 2 - Cleveland - The Grog Shop Detroit, MI - "It helps that we love doing this and love to do whatever it takes to stay on the road," says ELECTRIC SIX frontman Dick Valentine, about how prolific he and his five bandmates are. "I've always said that all we need is for each guy in this band to write two songs a year and we have another new album." The result of this ‘two songs per band member’ ideology, HEARTBEATS AND BRAINWAVES, was released on October 11, 2011 via Metropolis Records. The band is currently on its Hello, Destructor!!!! The onslaught of Foot Village is not something you hear everyday. The band's fusion of screaming vocals and an arsenal of drums gives Foot Village a sound not easily describable and experimentally unique. Buzzbin caught up with band member Brian Miller before their arrival in Cleveland to blow the crowd away at Now That's Class on Wednesday. Tell me alittle about the origins of Foot Village. Most of us had been making music for a long time before doing Foot Village. None of our other projects were really your standard rock bands, but still, pretty normal instrumentation compared to Foo...

Taintstick 6LBS of Sound Bands that tread the parody/comedy line are getting to be a dime a dozen. Some do it well, but Taintstick isn’t one of them. A few tunes here draw a laugh or two, but mostly it sounds like a bad electronic version of Turbonegro. When it doesn’t it’s just a complete joke like their Blink 182-bash in “Apple Juice,” or a recorded version of presumably one of the band member’s 2-year-old kids, “I Love Tiger, I Love Fifty.” Even though they obviously have their collective tongue planted firmly in their cheek, it’s too stupid and ridiculous to even consid...

It's a night of hard-rock and metal, fresh new bands and a convergence of talent. Annabell's is packed with Akron music fans getting their first glimpses of two brand new amalgamations of the Akron music scene: Duunes and Octiger, with the increasingly popular Megachurch sandwiched between them. Duunes are up first, priming the crowd with ear-splitting distortions before diving into their brand of aggressive rock. The riffs go from funky to metal, and their range keeps it interesting. The Duunes are made up of ex-members of Sofa King Killers, Six-Parts Seven, Hell's Information and Beas...

-->by E. M. Serensky The House of Blues’ Cambridge Room came to life on June 15th with music, energy, and fun! The Spring Standards opened for the New York-based indie-rock/pop band, Wakey! Wakey!. The room was full of faithful followers and soon-to-be fans. The Spring Standards, formed by James Cleare, Heather Robb, and James Smith set the mood for the evening with their lively rocking-folk sound and energetic stage presence. Even crutches didn’t slow down Robb’s driving vocals and rhythmic presence. The guitarists were equally as great, both singing lead on multiple songs...
