If you've seen River City Extension play, you are familiar with the set up. A small stage is filled to the brim with band members howling with delight and raw emotion through every blood-pumping lyric and note. If you've never seen this large ensemble play, you are truly missing out on a wild and theatrical display from a group of breathtakingly talented musicians. The band returned to Akron's Musica June 30 with an opening set by Ben Henderson, which the crowd learned would be his last on this particular tour. Henderson's quiet acoustic strumming was accented with his gritty yet soulful...
In an old Nashville house transformed into a recording studio, Ryan Humbert and an eight-piece band geared up to record a stunning 18 songs in four days. The result: a heart-driven pop rock album infused with Americana, highlighting the trials and tribulations of human relationships. “Sometimes The Game Plays You” is an observation on how people interact in love and loss, but it’s not all heartbreak. “The last two songs,” Humbert pointed out, “they remind you that you’ll get through all the hard times and come out the other side a stronger person.” The music embodies the...
Back when At The Drive-In was putting out records and going out on tours they were about the most exciting thing in rock 'n' roll. It almost felt like as they broke up rock took a turn toward nostalgia with bands like The Hives and the White Stripes kicking out throw back style jams, a staunch opposite to At The Drive-In's progressive stance. Not to say that all those bands didn't contribute something to the history of rock music. When the Mars Volta hit the scene it was an exciting moment. The forward thinking members of At The Drive-In push their boundaries to new levels. Now on its sixth...

Laundromat patrons, men contemplating their own demise, junkies, lost souls and broken young men: These are the characters that populate the songs of Viva Le Vox, and these are the lives they lead. These glimpses into unseen worlds are set against a backdrop of sleazy Dixieland jazz. In between chopping wood at his brother’s Pennsylvania home, Viva Le Vox songwriter/guitarist/singer Tony Bones tells Buzzbin that early jazz singers, gypsy jazz and old New Orleans funeral marches, along with ’70s punk rock like The Clash, inform the band’s sound. Bones says that when he’s writing s...
About a year ago, when Dead City Dealers guitarist Mario Sapanero heard his singer wanted to pursue other interests, he didn’t skip a beat. For one, the guitarist and his motley crew of misfits and rif-raff have an insatiable work ethic, and their attitude of playing anytime, anywhere for anyone wasn’t about to go out the window for something as trivial as a front man leaving. For another, there were show opportunities. Simply put, since the group’s inception in 2007 the Dead City Dealers’ ethos is being on the stage. “The first two years of the band we played an absolute a...
If you live in northeast Ohio and haven’t heard of Stone Slinger, you must have been hiding in a cave for ten years — the Canton natives have played nearly every bar in the area. If that’s the case, come out of that hole and allow us to catch you up to speed. Stone Slinger consists of Todd “Wolf” Williams on vocals, Andy “Riffman” Masalko and Mike “Stone” Fisher on guitar, Neal “Beard” Franklin on bass and Kevan “Mountain” Phares rounding out the band on drums. Buzzbin caught up with the band over enough cheap beers and cigarettes to feed a village in Africa. Afte...

When Josh Homme of QOTSA says that the Truckfighters are "the best band that ever existed," you should listen. Labeling themselves “throove metal,” this Cleveland-area band was born in 2009 and named for a city in the Bible where war refugees found shelter. The band members try to stay true to metal forefathers such as Metallica and Megadeth. ...
Many groups call themselves cover bands, but few reach the distinction of being a tribute band. That designation means more than just playing songs that another band made famous — it means performing those songs in a way that would make the original band proud. Dark Side of the Moon (DSOTM), the Pink Floyd tribute band, has set out to do that. Having the musical chops isn’t an issue. Between the seven band members they have more than 230 years of experience. The band has been together for three years now, so they’ve had plenty of time to tighten up as a group, and naturally, they all ...
I’m a little frazzled when I show up at the Brick House Tavern for my interview with the guys of Mr. 101. I’m in the middle of a move; I just woke up from a 7 p.m. nap; I have my hair pulled back. You know it’s a bad day when my hair’s pulled back. I walk into the restaurant and consequently, into the biggest interview I’ve ever had. And by biggest, I mean that all EIGHT band members are smiling up at me from the table. With eight different guys and musical influences ranging from Bone Thugs and Twista to Frank Sinatra and everything in between (even Rancid and Tiger Army), ...
What a simple joy bowling can be. Whether it’s an afternoon trip to the lanes with the family or a night out with friends, bowling is always a welcome cure for breaking up winter monotony. Plus, it’s an activity that one doesn’t have to be very good at to enjoy. So when Akron’s The Oxnards invited me to roll a few frames at Stonehedge, I was more than happy to oblige. Their brand of manic “Talking Heads meets The Ramones” (as vocalist and guitarist Wes Cowie puts it) rock has already gained the band some loyal followers in the Akron area, helping to pack the house at recent Anna...
Veteran punk rocker Joe Queer has made a career out of doing things his way, Sinatra style. Luckily for us, he hasn’t changed a bit, as he demonstrates with The Queers’s new album, Back to the Basement. Speaking tersely, and punctuating nearly everything with an expletive or four, he’s at the beginning of his new tour and things are looking positive. “We’re three for three so far.” he says optimistically—or cynically, I can’t tell. The Queers, often described as “Ramones-core”, formed in New Hampshire in ‘82. The band played intermittently throughout the ...
By: Julia Kazar Thursday night kicked off the Brackish Water Band’s summer tour. The first stop for the country/ bluegrass band was Annabell’s in Akron. They played a two hour set upstairs in the lounge that was full of foot-tapping and good times. It was a show filled to the brim with southern voices as well as sounds, and it was perfect for a summer night. If you’ve ever been to Annabell’s you know just how small the stage is upstairs, now imagine trying to squeeze four musicians and their instruments on the stage. It’s not exactly very roomy but if the Brackish Water...
Psychedelic/indie/rock duo mr. Gnome is bringing a fresh sound to the Cleveland music scene. Sounding a bit like a more upbeat Viva Voce at times, the group's alluring quasi-rock lucid-dream psychedelia takes experimental rock to the next level. Lead vocalist Nicole Barille plays guitar, while Sam Meister backs her up on drums, though it often sounds like there has to be more band members to create such resounding noise. The twosome creates a beautiful atmospheric rock that is both mesmerizing and explosive, both calming and haunting. As they experiment with sound, they create a luna...
By Ashley Weekley Ashley and Brandon here to bring you the newest and greatest sounds of the music world. November 15 we caught up with San Diego rockers, Pierce the Veil, right while on their very first headlining tour. Here’s what we could pump outta the guys. Ash: How did you guys meet? Vic: The band was originally me and my brother Mike. We met Tony… Tony: I used to work at a guitar store in San Diego. They used to come in all the time, and they needed someone to play guitar, so… Jaime: At the time, I was in another band with Tony, and that band kinda stopped playing t...
By Ed Buchanan The latest release by French band The Old Dead Tree represents a strong mix of metal and progressive rock. Taking elements of each style, ODT blends them into an entertaining and well-balanced sonic package as shown on the disc titled The Water Fields. The Water Fields opens with the track “Start the Fire.” A powerful beginning gives the listener a good feeling about the remainder of the album. The band members show some impressive chops and great musicality as they showcase their hybrid genre exceptionally well. While the first track lyrically focused on the band’s ...
