It is difficult to describe Shit-Box Jimmy without arriving at “Just go see them play live.” The Cleveland three-piece has built steam in recent months, largely due to their efforts to play out and expose themselves — er, their music — to new people. This is a band that does not blend into the rest of the evening’s bill; the spastic, kinetic energy that they create is impossible to overlook. Front man Joey Nix loses control when he plays. It’s as if the songs combust and fight their way out of him — he howls with just a hint of twang — and this unrestrained delivery commands...

By Rory Axelrod Akron's Shivering Timbers second effort is a sprawling work that comprises as many genres as it does moods. And that is the strength of this record: its ability to wash the listener over in waves of nostalgia, and wonder, with a sense of introspective inquiry that could make one wistful or regretful, depending on their disposition. At times they burst forth with wild and unbounded joy (“I Love You So Much!” and “Sing Sing”), and in other moments they chill with haunting melodies and arrangements (“Wayfairing Stranger” and “Without Someone”) that one could ...

BY STEVE HALLO Here's the thing about the Canton rockers inSuper Predator: For the most part, they actually are super predators. This became abundantly clear about a half hour into our conversation as guitar player Eric Blankenhorn and drummer Dan Meinhart laid out their zombie contingency plans. The moniker also suits the band's sound — a creeping, prowling sludgy rock, that veers off into metal and blues regions, throwing the listener off the fact that they are being stalked until Super Predator pounces into full-force crushing sonic territory. Equal parts Fu Manchu, Sonic Youth and ston...

BY RORY AXELROD If All Dinosaurs had an Obama-style hit list it would read like the Yellow Pages, as drummer Joe Willis said jokingly between sips of an ice-cold brew dog: “When we play, we just want to sweat our faces off and make everyone die.” For those who have never witnessed the beer-sploshing, sweat-flopping, frantic madness of an All Dinosaurs show, this statement would seem absurd. To anyone who has seen the wild antics of the band just having a good time, it makes perfect sense. This exuberant energy is only possible through absolute absorption in the moment, completely consume...

Photo by Sarah Megysey Article by Alisa Manna Professor Greenhouse started their musical career in Kent, Ohio but are now making their way to Denver, Colorado at the end of July. What began in 2008 as a one-man acoustic-folk act has transformed into a three-piece rock ‘n’ roll explosion. Though the band went through several incarnations during the past four years, Professor Greenhouse are finally satisfied with their arrangement. The current line-up consists of vocalist-rhythm guitarist Chris Wallis, drummer Bob Vokac and lead guitarist Charles “Carl” Welch. The band r...

Since forming in 2008, Akron’s Mockingbird, made up of Chadd Beverlin (drums), Mike Gilpatrick (bass) and Andy Strickland (guitar, vocals), having been shredding the scene in the Rubber City with its heavy hybrid of stoner rock and progressive metal. Since releasing its self-titled debut record in 2010, the band has been through a few changes. Fans of the band will notice than they are back down to a three-piece, as bassist Gilpatrick explained: “We were working with a few guitar players, looking for a bigger sound, but it just wasn’t working out like we thought it would.” Accordingly...

We caught up with Dalin Jones, bassist and vocalist of Son Of Neckbeard, Canton, Ohio's own horror rock band. Here's our 10 questions for Son of Neckbeard: Who the hell is Neckbeard? Neckbeard is the being. He is the alpha and omega. He is the creator. He's so much bigger than anyone could ever be. We always pictured him as some type of Viking god, but it takes so many parts to be a god. So we're the Son of Neckbeard. Tell me about what inspires your sound? There's just a really broad spectrum. We're fans of everything from Sleep, FuManchu and all the way back to bands like The Doobie...

If you think the Canton music scene has struggled in recent years compared to other northeast Ohio cities, you must not have heard Come Wind. Choosing not to settle for the typical metal sound found in the area, the boys of Come Wind have instead crafted a sound that would make fans of the mid-’90s indie music scene smile cheek to cheek. Singer Nick Sayre, guitarist Aaron Troyer and drummer Ben Roth first got acquainted in the hardcore band Forthewhile before meeting up with bassist Tal Miller to try a different angle. “That band broke up, and we wallowed around with nothing to do ...

The new project, "Break Routine," features the brothers sharing vocal duties with Bobby on guitar. They debuted their new E.P. (which was given away for free) at their show with Smoking Popes Dec. 28th at the Grog Shop, where they performed the songs full band assisted by drummer Dan Malone (Full Time Ghost) and bassist Will Farmer (The Universe And Me). You can stream and download the semi-acoustic "Seduc...

Now That's Class - Thursday, Nov. 10th On third album Spills Out, Brooklyn noise-punk mischief-makers Pterodactyl have mutated from their abrasive loft-show roots into a glorious, broken-pop juggernaut. The band's squealing, sweat-soaked art-bustle had rapidly put them alongside contemporaries like Oneida, These Are Powers and Parts & Labor; but Spills Out gently leads the trio towards the uplifting, wistful harmonies of '60s rockers like The Zombies, CSNY and the pre-acid Beatles-- "When John was a heavy drinker and the songs were kind of sad," says bassist/vocalist Jesse Hodges. Pterodactyl...

November 11 - Cleveland - The Symposium New album to drop day of Cleveland show, at The Symposium! Get ready for the true spirit of DIY to inhabit your eardrums. Psych rock trio, Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor, are about to release the most finely-tuned representation of their spacey, psychedelic aesthetic: Spectra Spirit, nine tracks unified by tone, mood and a sound only vintage equipment and painstaking labor can produce. The album, to be released by New Fortune Records on Nov. 11, will be pressed on translucent yellow vinyl, and feature screen printed artwork by Sisters bassist, Er...

Sex Pistols bassist and former Pulse cover boy Glen Matlock returns with his band, the Philistines, and a new record "Born Running." Between the occasional payday with the Pistols and moonlighting as bassist of the reformed Faces, Matlock found time to hit the studio to lay down his most solid release to date. "Born Running" slams out of the gate with a British power-pop vibe, as does "Get What We Get," which is the most soaring track on the record. "Timebomb" and "Nowheresville" compliment an effort that truly doesn't carry a bad tune. Matlock, as with the rest of the Pistols, could never wor...

They may have changed their name, but don't let it fool yo. The Suite D's are packing as much punch as they ever did when they were the Sweet Delights. Ed. note: This article first appeared in the Spring 2010 Youngstown Pulse. By B.J. LISKO Youngstown Pulse Magazine YOUNGSTOWN – It’s no surprise that the remaining members of what once were The Sweet Delights, now The Suite D’s are a close knit group. When the band dropped from eight members to five in late 2009, they had to continue under their former name for three shows before they could start a new. The internet features, the MySp...

The Wonder Years is a pop punk band out of PA that began in 2005. They are signed to Hopeless Records and have released three full length albums, two EPs and several compilations since their beginnings. The Binterns got to talk to bassist, Josh Martin. Carmen: What’s a necessity for tour? Josh: Gold bond. Michelle: Gold bond? Josh: I’m just being honest. It keeps you cool and keeps your things dry, like your shoes and unmentionables. It’s a necessity. Carmen: That’s a good thought. Josh: It’s hot out here, I’m not playing games and I’m a little overweight, so...

Take one mic-swinging vocalist who throws himself to the floor, the crowd, the walls, and into his band mates. Toss in two in-synch guitarists who shred and toss their instruments around. Add a fleet-fingered bassist and a rock-solid drummer holding it all down. Mix in equal parts high energy and catchy hooks, and voilà! This formula renders Sparks The Rescue. Most local musicians go unsung in the rest of the nation, destined to play area venues not far from their home base. That’s not the case for local boys Annabel. Formed shortly after high school, the DIY indie band is the product of brothers Ben and Andy Hendricks. After a demo or two and a few short-lived members, the boys met up with bassist Scotty Moses. Two years later the band hooked up with keyboardist Corey Willis and the legendary lineup was set. As singer/guitarist Ben puts it, “It’s been paradise ever since.” Following their first official EP, “Now That We’re Alive,...

Heat advisories didn’t keep kids from coming out to Vans Warped Tour in herds on Wednesday. The temperature was in the 90s for most of the day, but the bands were hotter. The new location didn’t deter anyone from hitting up this year’s show either. The Cleveland leg of Warped Tour has traditionally been held at Time Warner Cable Amphitheater, but this year it was moved to Blossom Music Center after Time Warner Cable closed to make way for the new casino. The A parking lot was transformed into the main area of the festival with a halfpipe, a Nintendo 3DS tent and most of the stages,...

Aiming to stand out in the Cleveland metal scene, NO have been letting their music “breathe from them” since 2008. What I hear is a talented band with dark, layered songs — more of a thinking man’s metal. The solo guitarist and bassist employ a total of 14 strings between them, so you can do the math on that one. ...
