The Spitwads are from Akron's deepest darkest punk rock bowels. They play songs about porn stars and masturbation, wear stinky leather jackets, converse shoes and consume enough cheap beer to put down a large horse. They will be in full-on pop-punk debauchery mode at Ronali's The Rock in Massillon on Friday March 4th. You may need to wear a raincoat. The Said So, The Dead Records (from Ft Wayne IN) and The Most Beautiful Losers will also be there swilling beer and delivering fine rock treats for you kiddies....

Fort Wayne Indiana seems to have a burgeoning music scene and is a city that seems similar in many ways to Canton and Akron. Blue-collar and just beginning to embrace a growing art and music scene, the weather is pretty much the same and I have a feeling that the musicians that live there have that same sense of longing to escape as the guys from around here do. As the first chords of  The Dead Records new cd blared from my speakers I imagined these guys spending the winter holed up in a basement, staying warm by ripping into their instruments, writing songs and hanging out together. The g...

“Up to it, down to it, damn the man who can’t do it,” the four men chant. “If you can’t do it, you oughta be nailed to it. And not let do it.” Shot glasses flash in the air and slam back on the bar, and Canton band The Most Beautiful Losers are ready to hit the stage. Begun by its vocalist, Chris Bentley, this hard-drinking, hard-working band was originally supposed to be a foray into classic country music. It veered into rock territory as Bentley began to teach himself the electric guitar, taking cues from acts like alt-rock pioneers The Replacements, whom the band idolizes. ...

By Denver Collins First Friday The rain held off just long enough to hear some captivating new music at First Friday in Canton on the 4th. The Big Sweet, a young rock/alternative band of 15 and 16-year-olds, played a solid set in front of the Imperial Room for a crowd of wandering pedestrians and proud parents. Made up of drummer Drew Watson, bassist Matt McDonald, rhythm guitarist Brad Berbarie and lead guitarist/vocalist Sam Regas, the group shows promise and an excellent musical IQ. They cite Tom Petty, Sonic Youth, The Pixies and Wilco as major musical influences. They appear to ...

We headed downtown to Maria’s Arcadia Grille to meet Canton’s The Most Beautiful Losers. Sam Huff and Chris Bentley were looking rough, and this first thing that came out of Bentley’s mouth was “We’re still hungover. Sorry.” Brad Belcher strolled in and ordered a coffee. Akron has The Black Keys, and Canton has The Most Beautiful Losers, a drinking band with a rock and roll problem. They’ve been through a plethora of band mates, brawled in bars all over the country and had the city shut down their home base and most underground club of all time. Born in 2002, Bentley and B...
