Joseph Rafidi, drummer and founder of Cereal Banter, is being featured in the June issue of DRUM! Magazine, which is in stores now. DRUM! interviewed Rafidi and learned that he honed his unique, frenetic rock forte as a teenager in his parent’s dining room where his drumkit replaced the dining table. The feature also talks about Rafidi’s personal drumming influences, musical resume in the Cleveland and Youngstown music scenes, and notes that Cereal Banter is reserved for his most experimental ambitions. Cereal Banter is a Cleveland-based art rock duo. Their next show is at the Beachlan...
So here’s the story. I once went to check out All Dinosaurs at this jazz club in Brooklyn, which was kind of weird because they aren’t a jazz band at all. I got there late, but being the cool dudes that they are, they weren’t mad. We ended up going to this party at a warehouse that was converted into practice space for circus performers. Totally bizarre. The point of the story illustrates the band fairly well, as they disregard clichés while burning a rock ‘n’ roll trail through unfamiliar terrain, harking back to a time when music was exciting, fresh and dangerous....
November 22 - Cleveland - Beachland Ballroom Sondre Lerche's prolific curiosity didn’t lead him to a new genre so much as introduce a new level of candidness in his work. His eponymous sixth record, released on Mona this summer, has been praised by critics and fans for his advanced melodic instinct, intimate yet refined arrangements and vivid lyricism. The Norwegian-born, Brooklyn-based artist is now taking his show on the road with a solo tour announced for this November. From the gripping cut-to-the-chase opener “Ricochet” to the uber-catchy “Private Caller,” from the naked d...
November 8 - Akron - The Lounge Love art but never fancied trying to get an education in it? You're not alone. This idea that art should be a fun, informative thing was what gave rise to Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, where 40 percent of the participants are non-professional artists. The event allows those with a passion for the arts to draw underground performers in a sociable and “boozy” atmosphere. Started in Brooklyn, Dr. Sketchy's has grown and now covers more than 100 cities around the world. This event held by the Akron branch will include prizes from Baby Tattoo, PsychoReindeer...

This Brooklyn, NY, based singer/songwriter plays tunes reminiscent of Neutral Milk Hotel and Elliott Smith. Since his debut release in 2002, he has released a number of full lengths and a handful of EPs, including 2011's “Between The Concrete and The Clouds,” which he is currently touring in support of. ...
The Sweet Ones We Work Harder Brooklyn garage rockers The Sweet Ones pull no punches. You’re getting a group of hard-working, pill-popping, cheap beer swilling rock ‘n’ rollers that really do work harder. Cementing their reputation as a live act (catch them at Cedars Dec. 12), The Sweet Ones are a drinking, slamming good time. Think Jonathan Richmond on good speed, permanently. Sure, the obligatories are there – MC5, Stones, Dolls, and of course Mike Watt as illustrated in “Got Watt.” The trio has a tale to tell, they do it with gusto and pizzazz. They’re going to do it with ca...

I’ve heard about this beer for well over a year now and I’m finally getting around to trying it. This one was calling to me — I just had to convince my local retailer it was well worth getting some on the shelf. Brooklyn Brewery Sorachi Ace is a Saison, or Belgian farmhouse ale. It’s brewed with sorachi ace hops, a relatively new and little-used hop variety created in Japan. Perhaps it will gain more popularity, and I think with good cause. I find that Japanese brews tend to be light and more on the sweet, fruity-funk side of beer, and Brooklyn Brewery’s use of this variety shows tha...
