Do you have the inner urge to buy art books?! You're in luck! The Canton Museum of Art is selling hundreds of used art books on “First Friday” March 2. The sale is a result of reorganization of the Museum library, which is retaining books relevant to the Museum's Permanent Collection. The sale begins on March 2 at noon and will continue through “First Stop” from 5:30 to 6:30 – a free wine and cheese reception hosted with ABOUT Magazine. This is a great chance for art fans to grow their personal art book libraries. Books are priced between 50 cents and $10. Make sure t...

William Bogdan is an artist in every aspect of his life, always has been and likely always will be. Curiously, though, the 68-year-old will be having his first public showing of his work this month and with a few exceptions, the works on display will be among the first he has made in the past 40 years. Bogdan was introduced to the art of woodcuts during a University of Akron course about graphic arts, including silk screening and linoleum cuts. Though he was studying illustration, Bogdan said that he was drawn to woodcutting nearly instantly. “You could actually do a piece of art and ...

Liz Phair’s latest offering is the self-released “Funstyle” was her first album in almost five years. The entire 11 song album is available for download on her website for about $5.99.  The first sample for download was the terrifically bizarre “Bollywood”. Against her backbeat of weird, broad-stroking and stereotypical Indian pop, Phair…raps about the time she got talked into penning music for cable television. If it sounds weird and uncomfortable….it was. It felt like a desperate play for relevance in the post M.I.A. pop world. I consider myself a fan of Phair’s whole ca...

For a band that has been rockin’ your socks off for the last 21 years, one would think the singer would be a grumpy know-it-all, too tired of talking about his own music. Not so for Page Hamilton, singer and guitarist for the band Helmet.  As a matter of fact, Page is one of the most gentle and kindest individuals you are ever likely to meet. After forming in 1989 and releasing their first full length record a year later, the band cemented their name in rock history in 1992 with the release of their second record, Meantime. Never a man to sit still, Page expanded to other outlets b...

It is never easy to hop right back into the performance groove when you have not performed as a unit on stage for nearly a year. However  when Kim and Kelley Deal and their band The Breeders hit the Beachland Ballroom stage this past Thursday, they proved that practice can be over-rated. True, while Kim had toured recently in the Middle East with the Pixies, Kelley had not played live since December. The Deal twins were coming through NE Ohio en route to Monticello, New York for All Tomorrow’s Parties annual event with a stop in Philly in between. So being the firs...

Angie Heimann and Cass Sochacki are a match made in folk heaven. Their story sounds like it could be straight out of an odd yet beautiful folk song. After growing up in the Kent area for most of her life, Angie decided to split for Mendocino, California about nine years ago. When she got there, she integrated pretty quickly by living with, of all things, a rural circus named The Flynn Creek Circus. While she was working on the circus' float for the Fouth of July Parade, she met a guitar player named Cass. Since then, they've been making music together, most often with a full band backi...

By Julia Kazar Lydia Loveless might only be 19, but she sings as if she’s already experienced a great deal of life.  She recently released her debut album and fans and critics alike are impressed.  Loveless hails from Columbus, Ohio and regularly plays gigs at Annabell’s Bar & Lounge in Akron, but her twangy country voice seems like it could be more at home playing shows in the deep south.  No matter where she is playing, Loveless manages to charm the crowd.  A performer since she was a young child, Loveless is well prepared for the success that is sure to lie ahead with mu...

By: Julia Kazar If you were lucky enough to be at the Clay’s Park Rock N' Resort Music Festival on Saturday then you know just how incredible the Theory Of A Deadman show was.  After a full day of tribute and original rock bands, and Hoobastank, the crowd at Clay’s Park was in the mood to rock.  Saturday was the second day of rock music, sun and beer drinking for many members of the audience, but if they were tired in any way, they didn’t show it.  The show was packed with energy, both from the band and the crowd. The sun had set and it had cooled off a little bit by 9:30 wh...

The All Good Festival is alive and kicking in the gorgeous scenic mountains outside of Masontown, West Virginia.  Just south of the Mason-Dixon, the people are laid-back and mild mannered, yet still know how to throw down for a great time.  The festival is truly unique in that the audience has grown tremendously over time (an estimated 25,000 in attendence this year) yet it still retains its small, community-like atmosphere. It's an eclectic four-day celebration of music, with artists from all over the board; from bluegrass to rock, from funk to reggae, electronica and everything in b...

3v0cGueuq8o By Julia Kazar ‘Loud,’ ‘crazy’ and ‘amazing’ are just three of the words that can best describe an August Burns Red show, and they definitely apply to their show on Wednesday night when they played at Musica. Also on the bill that night were a few other metal bands; My Children My Bride, Ichabod Crane and The Approach and the Execution. All of whom put on incredible shows as well. By the time August Burns Red was ready to take the stage the crowd was already pumped up and excited for the show, even though Musica was packed full of people and because of the...

By Julia Kazar The Ruckus, a ska band with a rock sound, from a small town in Kansas has been hard at work this summer. They just released a new CD called “Never Stop” and now they are going on tour to promote it, along with all their other music. The tour makes its way to Northeast Ohio early next week with a show at Conton’s Old Glory on Monday night. Also playing that night are Co-Pilot and General Riot. The music starts at 8:00 and it’s sure to be a night filled with some great music, so don’t miss a minute of it. A few years ago eight guys from a small town in Kansas ...

By  Julia Kazar If you’re a Springsteen fan then you will definitely want to check out his new album/DVD combo. It’s a thirty song recording of a concert he did in Hyde Park London recently, and it’s aptly called London Calling: Live in Hyde Park by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The show opens with a cover of the classic Clash song “London Calling” and even though it’s not really the E Street Band’s style of music they make an honest attempt at the song. What makes it cool though is that at every Springsteen concert fans will throw requests on stage and at ...

By Julia Kazar Country singer Elizabeth Cook has just released her fifth studio album, Welder. The album has already received many positive reviews. Cook has been making music for most of her life, she comes from a musical family and they taught her to sing at a very young age. But she didn’t make her musical debut to the public for awhile. She released her first album, The Blue Album, back in 2000 when she was twenty eight years old. Since then she has been consistently making records. Her latest album is quickly becoming her most successful, and for good reason too. The album...

By Jessica Lumpp Watching local favorite, Amplexus live is like being vocally assaulted then cuddled immediately after (but they're still the big spoon). Their unique sound blends heavy instrumental sound with melodic singing (and sometimes screaming). It's a perfect mix of heavy and soft for an audience of metalheads, alternative hipsters and everyone in between. Catch them  in the Cambridge Room at the Cleveland House of Blues Friday, July 2nd where you can enjoy tracks from their first album, "Deus Ex Machina" as well as songs from their new EP "Ghost Sessions."  Help them on th...

By Julia Kazar Soul singer Leah Ashton will be at Musica in Akron this Thursday to promote her new album; Things Better Left Unsaid. The album is the second full length album for the singer/songwriter, although music seems to just run through her veins. She has been singing and performing ever since she was a toddler, performing at church and family evens whenever she got the opportunity. As she matured she began playing shows all over her hometown of Akron, Ohio at local coffee shops and other small venues. In 2005 she enrolled at Anderson University to pursue a music degree. When ...

By Julia Kazar Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are known for their unique style of rock and roll music, but when they set out to make his latest album they decided to do things a little differently. Instead of following the formula that has worked for the band for years, a mix of heartland rock and catchy pop, they went with a more country and blues inspired theme, and it might not have been the best choice for them. Credit where credit is due though, this album was recorded mostly live. Luckily, Tom Petty, and all the Heartbreakers are incredibly talented musicians so what came out wa...

By Julia Kazar The Westside Relay for Life is taking place this Friday and Saturday at the Copley High School track. Relay for Life takes place in over 5,000 communities around the United States, and also in over 20 countries every year. It is a fun event where everyone in the community can get together to raise money for cancer research, and honor those that are fighting the disease or have lost the battle. There will also be a relay taking place in Canton at Canton Central Catholic Stadium. Every relay consists of teams, usually of about 10-15 people who take turns walking around t...

By Julia Kazar The retro sounding British band 22-20’s have just released their latest studio album, Shake/Shiver/Moan. The band’s name comes from the classic Skip James blues song “22-20 Blues” Although the band started out as a blues band they quickly realized that the style of blues that they wanted to play didn’t match what their audience wanted to hear. They were often told in rehearsals that they couldn’t play certain songs because the club owners didn’t think they sounded enough like blues songs. So they decided to follow in the footsteps of one of their major influenc...
