If there were an award for the strangest film at the festival, Yorgos Lanthimos' Alps would run away with the prize. If you are familiar with Lanthimos' work, however, then you know that weirdness for him comes second nature and you are in for one hell of a wild ride when you decided to tackle one of his films. Alps follows a group of individuals, who seek out those that have lost someone close, offering up their services to take the place of the deceased in order to console their loss and ease the pain. Whether you end up liking the film or loathing it, one thing is for certain – Greece ...

Hailing from Dover, Ohio, State Bird plays some pretty raucous rock ‘n’ roll, though they didn’t start out that way. Those familiar with the band’s earlier efforts might remember them having a more indie-pop sound. Well apparently the boys in the band got into booze, pot and late ’90s post-punk between releases and produced a gem of a stonerish rock record. While it has long been said you can’t judge a book, or in this case a record, by its cover, State Bird’s “Healing the Pain” cover is representative of the sound on the album inside the sleeve: Two sweaty girls in party ...

Tonight, a full lineup hits the stage at Barley's Pub. Ranging from growling hardcore to happy hip-hop, there's a little something for everyone represented. Local nerdcore hip-hop duo, 2D6, will open a set full of rock and hardcore which seems odd until you realize 2D6 is playing everywhere lately. Maybe they're shooting for the "hardest working band in nerdcore" moniker. They're certainly energetic enough to get the crowd going, regardless. Pop-punk trio The Royal Remedy will keep the atmosphere charged, as will the acoustic rock strummings of Candlelight Armada. Headliners We Shall Prevail...

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll: No matter how much of a cliché this has become, that legendary trifecta remains the motto the Dwarves first embraced 25 years ago when the band was created — though they don’t acknowledge it directly, preferring to take the “show, don’t tell” approach. “We did Pittsburgh last night, very energetic crowd,” said Dwarves lead singer Blag Dahlia, when I asked how the current tour was going. “Had some sexual intercourse.” “It’s way easier for me to get laid now, I’ve become so much more legendary,” he joked. (At least, I think he wa...

Take one mic-swinging vocalist who throws himself to the floor, the crowd, the walls, and into his band mates. Toss in two in-synch guitarists who shred and toss their instruments around. Add a fleet-fingered bassist and a rock-solid drummer holding it all down. Mix in equal parts high energy and catchy hooks, and voilà! This formula renders Sparks The Rescue. Ingenuity Fest is a celebration of music, art and technology, with a focus on collaboration between the three fields. Held on the lower level of the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Cleveland, last year’s event was attended by more than 40,000 people. This year’s event is at the Detroit Superior Bridge and is expected to draw an even bigger crowd. Hundreds of artists will be displaying their work at this free event, and many of the exhibits are interactive, making it a truly unique art festival. This year’s fest also has Tesla Orchestra on the bill: The orchestra uses two giant Tesla coils to...

ofHuman is a band that you shouldn’t overlook. They’ve been garnering respect in the Columbus area since the beginning of 2010 and these guys definitely know their craft. They’ve got a sound somewhat reminiscent of Dashboard Confessional or Hoobastank. It’s that rock sound that toes the border between rock and pop, and it does it very well. Their new EP, Ever Present, is amazing. These guys have pure talent and when that was paired with producer Jim Wirt, who has worked with the likes of Jack’s Mannequin, Hoobastank and Incubus, a great record was born. ofHuman’s guitarists h...

European-inspired runway show in Akron There are three things every 20-something Akron girl has committed to memory: Thursday’s has the finest selection of hipster boys, Mr. Zub’s is always best at 3 a.m. and never walk past Zelio NOTO if you need that last paycheck. On June 18, the hard-to-resist NOTO threads will pull on our heartstrings (and our paychecks) at the store’s third annual summer fashion show. There are a few elements that set this year’s fashion show apart, however. The first? Unlike the past shows, held indoors at the High Street Gallery, the 2011 show will be held i...

I’m a little frazzled when I show up at the Brick House Tavern for my interview with the guys of Mr. 101.  I’m in the middle of a move; I just woke up from a 7 p.m. nap; I have my hair pulled back. You know it’s a bad day when my hair’s pulled back. I walk into the restaurant and consequently, into the biggest interview I’ve ever had. And by biggest, I mean that all EIGHT band members are smiling up at me from the table. With eight different guys and musical influences ranging from Bone Thugs and Twista to Frank Sinatra and everything in between (even Rancid and Tiger Army), ...

On Wednesday night Miniature Tigers, a four piece band hailing from Phoenix, hit the stage at Musica for a mellow show.  The band took the stage just past ten o’clock after three opening bands got the crowd rocking.  By the time Miniature Tigers began their set, there had already been almost three hours of great music before them. Even though Miniature Tigers aren’t from the area, they still made a real effort to relate to their crowd, talking about LeBron James and other issues that relate specifically to Akron area residents.  It makes a big difference when a band tries to relate w...

By Julia Kazar Lydia Loveless might only be 19, but she sings as if she’s already experienced a great deal of life.  She recently released her debut album and fans and critics alike are impressed.  Loveless hails from Columbus, Ohio and regularly plays gigs at Annabell’s Bar & Lounge in Akron, but her twangy country voice seems like it could be more at home playing shows in the deep south.  No matter where she is playing, Loveless manages to charm the crowd.  A performer since she was a young child, Loveless is well prepared for the success that is sure to lie ahead with mu...
