The Vortex Concert Club & Lounge on Brittain Road in Akron is the areas newest full-service concert venue, but it deserves to be one of the areas premiere concert  destination spots. Owner Andrew Leger, an Iraq War veteran, set out to create a great concert experience for everybody and he's succeeded. His enthusiasm for the project is evident in its execution. As most newly opened concert clubs, the place is absolutely spotless. It doesn't smell of the grime and filth of thousands of dedicated concert goers, yet. The place still has some innocence left. It's refreshing. The Vorte...

If you knew nothing about Illstyle Rockers and looked them up, you’d discover their break-dance battles on YouTube, but this group is so much more beyond that. MCing, DJing, Beatboxing and dancing are all aspects of Illstyle Rockers. They truly do it all. Members of Illstyle performed at Annabell's Bar & Lounge Saturday night. Old school funk and hip-hop could be heard even from the patio. Members would go onto the dance floor and pop a few moves every once in a while as the basement slowly filled with an assorted audience: a couple and their teenage daughter, hipster kids who usually...

Ella Riot calls it "Dancethink Music." Some might call it high-brow guilty-pleasure dance music. At the end of the day, it's hard to find a genre to apply to a band of music degrees shamelessly enamored with catchy hooks, who sing through a giant megaphone in French, shred Van Halen on electrified Irish bagpipes, write 80's tribute dance-rock anthems in 5/4, and re-sample themselves doing it live -- all to create a modern-day musical Frankenstein that will pull even the most self-conscious listener on to the dance floor. Formerly named My Dear Disco, the band is continuing a musical meta...

Before putting out its most current, fourth album, "Nothing," the dance-beat trio dubbed N.E.R.D. was toe to toe with the record label heads. Interscope was looking for a “club” concept and N.E.R.D. was more concerned with the overall vibe. What was ultimately unleashed was a Frankenstein of both visions. If you thought that N.E.R.D. had “jumped the shark” with their last album, Nothing will come as a well deserved surprise. The album starts “Party People” and it will turn you into a veritable dance floor zombie, the up-tempo will move your ass and the chorus will knock around i...

Despite a few technical problems during the beginning of Friday night's show, The Woovs still rocked out  Akron's own Key West, The Harbor Inn. Special friend of the band and former employee at the Harbor Inn, Renee Kintz, opened the show. She played barefoot, and her soulful voice had the audience whistling for more even with the microphone screeching throughout her performance. Before performing a song about mistakes, Kintz said, "Mistakes are fun to make." But singer Adam Lengyel of The Woovs didn't seem to think the technical mistakes from the sound booth were fun. During their boxi...

Tozzi's on 12th, swingin' home of the Canton Cabaret by E.M. Serensky The Canton Cabaret is in full swing, and all that’s missing is you! Why drive to Cleveland or Pittsburgh to see a great show when there are musical dinner theatres in your own backyard? The relatively new cabaret is brought to life with the help of local Lois DiGiacamo and produced by DiGiacomo's Rainbow Repertory, which is a Canton-based non-profit arts organization. The Rainbow Rep works hand-in-hand with new playwrights, musicians, and artists in many realms. Lois also hosts State of the Arts, a local TV show th...

Rubber City Grill, a downtown sports bar and grill, is quickly becoming THE place to be in Akron. Located just west of the corner of Exchange and Main Sts., customers can find the restaurant located inside LUX Niteclub. Just enter under the LUX marquee and walk upstairs. I promise there are people up there — people ready to serve you a cold drink with great food, and ready to share a laugh. You might ask, “Where does Rubber City come from? Why didn’t I hear about it until now? Why is it inside a Thursday/ Friday/ Saturday dance club? “ Well, the answer is simple: RC Grill is ma...
