Sonic Youth would not exist without its core – Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. While others members have come and gone over the last 30 years of the band's existence, the husband and wife duo has always been the key to holding Sonic Youth together. Now word has come through that Moore and Gordon have called its splitsville, which in effect has placed the legendary indie rockers in limbo. Gordon and Moore announced in a statement that they are separating after 27 years of marriage but will continued with a planned Sonic Youth South American tour in November. The press release goes on to stat...

Miss May I is a metalcore band out of Troy, Ohio that was formed in 2006. Two years later they were signed to Rise Records. Their debut album reached #29 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers List and one of their songs was featured on the Saw IV soundtrack. They released their sophomore album in 2010 and the Binterns got to talk to lead singer, Levi Benton. Carmen: Do you guys get bras thrown at you? Levi: Um, sometimes. Carmen: Do you collect them or do you know how many have been thrown at you? Levi: Not a lot, probably like twenty-something. But we tie them to stuff on stage. Usual...

Trouble Books and Mark McGuire, “Trouble Books and Mark McGuire” Mark McGuire of Emeralds fame has teamed up with Akron husband-and-wife synth duo Trouble Books to release a record that seamlessly blends both groups’ well-known styles. Often with collaborations of this type, one artist’s style predominates the mix. This makes for a record that feels less like a collective thought and more like a directive handed down from one band to the other: play this, don’t play that, sing here and don’t sing there. However, this is hardly the case with the self-titled record. Throug...

Forgotten Souls of Antiquity have a sound from an all but forgotten period in music: the ‘50s.  Remnants of the decade can be found in today’s music, but it’s nothing like the pure ‘50s rock and roll this Cleveland band is creating. On the self-titled album to be released June 18, whether it is rockabilly, like the opener “Belly of the Beast, or instrumental surf like “Highway Pipeline,” Forgotten Souls of Antiquity fit its Facebook description of “loud and old.” The band rounds out its sound on its debut album with remakes of “Down by the Riverside” and “No Surf...

Northeast Ohio musicians Dave Hammer’s Power Supply have kicked off a steady and promising debut with their record, Words. Founding members Dave Hammer and bassist Matt DeRubertis met in a Jazz Guitar Theory class at The University of Akron and the jazz influences are prevalent throughout the duration of the album. Single “I Ang Alive” should make a few waves through the area with its catchy and worthwhile musicianship. Hammer’s vocals taken on a bit of a Sublime feel while shades of Dave Matthews Band and even Akron natives The Black Keys come to mind while listening to the blues-r...

In some cases, secrets are just too good to be kept — especially when the secret refers to Via Lotus’s excellent debut album, “Secrets.” The privileged few who have heard it have a duty to tell as many people as possible. The musicians responsible for this tender throwdown of an album are singer Tasha Lynn (Natasha Addessi), guitarist JCK (Jeff Klemm), drummer (and JCK’s brother) Kev (Kevin Klemm) and bassist A-pop (Alex Popovici). They’re all local products, coming either from Canton or Stow. Via Lotus sounds like someone took a ’90s rock band and plopped them down in a Mo...

The bizarre Belgian alternative metal band Cloon is releasing their debut album “Mostly Harmless” soon. Cloon’s abnormal style probably won’t appeal to a mainstream audience but they’ll probably find the right crowd among fans of odd, quirky metal. They have a bit of the Alex Harvey band’s jazzy funk rock, Green Jello’s dark comedic metal and Tom Morello’s off-the-wall guitar solos. The album has a few disturbing moments, though. In the song “Halftooth” a reporter calls a woman and asks a series of disturbing questions about her recently dead son. The questions range f...

“Tape-Toons is noise, feedback, busted cymbals and three guys who are trying to make your ears bleed,” said the band’s artist, Bobby Makar. A Kent-based alternative rock band making music from the gutters, Tape-Toons consists of singer/guitarist Andrew Bittaker, bassist Allen Bittaker and drummer Dylan Gomez. Andrew and Gomez met as music majors at Kent State University and previously played together in the short-lived Mothership Jellyfish. After the band’s demise, the two musicians began working with Bittaker’s younger brother, forming Tape-Toons in the summer of 2009. Befo...

By | D. BEALL She’s not guzzling whiskey, she’s not breaking hearts just yet, it’s too early in the day. Good lookin’ blonde country punk Lydia Loveless is at home in Columbus reading her paper and drinking coffee and talking to Buzzbin Magazine. Her name alone conjures up thoughts of Lyle Lovett, Loretta Lynn, Lydia Lunch, and Deep Throat’s very own Linda Lovelace (“That’s a common mistake,” she laughs). When I listen to her sound, that combination is a pretty great way to describe it. Her debut album, The Only Man, boasts songs about drinking, lost love and shoo...

Akron-native Chrissie Hynde is in the twilight of a remarkable 30-plus year career as one of rock and roll’s premiere front women. Over two nights, back to Ohio, she gave her fans what they came to hear with stops in Akron and Cleveland. She brought a rock and roll performance for the adult set and with it her new band. The tour stops which were numbers 20 and 21 of 38 seemingly put a bounce back in the Rubber City gal’s step. Her male muse and co-frontman, 31-year-old singer-guitarist JP Jones and the Fairground Boys, performed in a way that rewards Hynde for all her years as th...

toq7cNCC1KE She is the great pretender or leader of The Pretenders, and he is a Welsh rocker who fell in love with this Pretender. So what’s the fuss?  She is the ageless Chrissie Hynde and he is JP Jones, 27 years younger. On their debut album, JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys’ Fidelity, the two tell the heart-wrenching tale of their impossible love. The sexual tension and longing fill every groove, guitar lick, duet and refrain. Fidelity is a potpourri of dramatic acoustic and rock balladry tinged with country and folk.  The melodic intertwining of Hynde’s trademark a...

Rachel Roberts, the lovable indie-folk Akron native, will play at Annabell's Thursday, July 1st, along with Plug-In Reindeer and Shivering Timbers. Roberts, known for her mellow music and lulling voice, keeps it simple with an acoustic guitar and solid songwriting. Her influences range from classical to classic rock, and has performed with many of the big-name acts from the area such as Chrissie Hynde, DEVO and The Black Keys. She's working on finishing her second album "Lighting Loves the Kite," as well as an album with her band, Rachel's Secret Stache. Her voice is clear and mesmerizi...

Dan Miraldi Thirsty It’s hard for any contemporary band to operate outside the influence of the Sixties, one of the most musically revolutionary periods of the century—and Dan Miraldi, a Northeast Ohio native who recently released Thirsty, his debut album, is no exception. The influence isn’t just unmistakable in the songs themselves, from the folksy Beatles-esque sound of “More Than Yesterday” to the Elvis-style rockabilly of “More and More”: the idealism of the decade also styles the way Miraldi positions himself as a singer and, ultimately, how his music affects those ...

By Julia Kazar Now that summer has finally come to Akron many people are beginning to make travel plans for the season, The Young Veins are no exception; they want us all to Take a Vacation! and bring their debut album along too. For their first album, The Young Veins seem to be ahead of the game, they sound like they have been playing together for a lifetime. Just one year ago Ryan Ross and Jon Walker left Panic! at the Disco for creative reasons, not long after they joined forces with Andy Soukal, Nick Murray, and Nick White to form The Young Veins. Even though 40% of the ...

Dizzy Whore is a sleaze metal band from Youngstown that is trying to bring back classic 80’s hard rock and judging by their debut album, the Desperate Side of Rock and Roll, they’re off to a great start.  Despite playing a style of music that lost its popularity in the early 90’s, they do a good job of making their music sound pretty current.  However, they’ll appeal to fans of 80’s metal more so than fans of modern rock.  There are a decent variety of songs on the album but it sticks to typical sleaze metal song categories.  The rock anthem, “The Desperate Side of Rock and Rol...

By Meghan Donavan Year Long Disaster guitarist Daniel Davies has no need to trade on his father’s (Kinks guitarist Dave Davies) fame. He and band mates Rich Mullins and Brad Hargreaves have plenty of talent on their own, thank you very much. They prove it on their debut album, to the point where they were double-booked this summer – opening for Foo Fighters on several dates, as well as headlining their own tour with Burning Brides. And even now they are on tour with the Gods of Metal, Motörhead! Hargreaves is better known as the drummer of Third Eye Blind, but his percussion work he...

By Charisma Charisma here with the guys from The Motherland United Kingdom, Circle of One. The band is made up of four crazy guys. Two of which share the mic and lead guitar, Julian and Richie, followed up by my new heartthrob SUV on bass and Mikey on drums. Charisma: How’s it going guys? SUV: Fucking shit hot Bute, it’ll be even better when we get our Welsh backsides out to the good old US. Charisma: You are known for your melodious and fierce tunes. Do you consider yourselves a rock and roll band? And who are your influences? Jul: Indeed we do consider ourselves a rock and...
