There is no denying that there has been a wave of '90s nostalgia in the music world lately, and some of the most beloved bands from 20 years ago are reuniting and releasing music to cash in on the craze. But some bands from the decade have been consistently going strong and evolving without slipping into obscurity. One such band is The Offspring, those punk-drenched dudes from California with huge hits like “Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)” and “Come Out And Play,” among many others. The band is not only celebrating the 20th anniversary of its second album, “Ignition,” this year, but...
Photo by Sarah Megysey Article by Alisa Manna Professor Greenhouse started their musical career in Kent, Ohio but are now making their way to Denver, Colorado at the end of July. What began in 2008 as a one-man acoustic-folk act has transformed into a three-piece rock ‘n’ roll explosion. Though the band went through several incarnations during the past four years, Professor Greenhouse are finally satisfied with their arrangement. The current line-up consists of vocalist-rhythm guitarist Chris Wallis, drummer Bob Vokac and lead guitarist Charles “Carl” Welch. The band r...
Talk about a guy who knows how to throw it all out there! Ryan Humbert's new CD "Sometimes the Game Plays You" is already everywhere and hasn't even been released yet. Not until June 16th at Lock 3 in Akron, that is. However, you can get a taste of the new album in downtown Canton on June 1st at the Buzzbin Art & Music Shop at the exclusive listening party. This is a benefit for Project Rebuild who install the new banner system on the side of the building as well as the bar inside Buzzbin. We love those dudes. From 6pm - 8pm there will be drinks compliments of Buzzbin Magazine while we...
Nights With a blend of shoegaze and slender psychedelic leanings, this Cleveland quartet weaves a gentle dreamscape with waves of guitar drone. It makes a fitting bed for the angular leads and airy vocal — though it’s not without heavier parts. All these movements and shifts carry the listener through a tumbling and rolling sea of lyrics constructed from half-forgotten daydreams, like the Black Angels running down an old set list from Rainer Maria. Has the potential to dazzle the less jaded, or maybe vice versa. Volcano Fortress These cats from Cleveland play some pretty frantic indi...
The mighty warlords of Crom helm a warship of doom and set forth on a conquest to pillage and devour everything in their path. Instead of riding steeds, these beer-swilling potheads sit atop roaring Kenworth semis and massive combine tractors. They’ve come for your women, your beer and all of your weed. Sound like a bizarre sci-fi epic? It’s not. It’s Canton’s very own soothsayers of doom, Son Of Neckbeard, and let me tell you, if you like your music extremely loud, weird and bowel-loosening heavy, these dudes are for you. They’re releasing their debut album February 3 at The Carriag...
Orlando is home to some very talented dudes, but singer/guitar player Bob Hershberger and drummer Waylon Thornton are a sonic force to be reckoned with. I saw them almost tear a stage to pieces and shake a room of soulless hipsters to their very core. Sounding like Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth meets My Bloody Valentine on a coke binge, it’s hard to believe that such a powerful, and at times melodic, noise comes from only two people. I know what you’re thinking — The Black Keys — and you’re wrong. Bob On Blonde is regularly delivering earthquakes off the Richter scale charts in Florid...
Rather than sleeping in on a rainy April morning, the four guys huddled in a living room were meticulously planning their set for that night's concert. For the Canton-based indie rock band A Minor Bird, it was just another show. And if the band's professionalism and talent are any indication, there will be many more shows to follow—shows that will undoubtedly take them to even bigger stages. Hailing from Malone University, A Minor Bird has played at a variety of area venues and opened for bands such as Switchfoot and mewithoutYou since forming in June 2008. Last year, they released the...
Still Drinkin’, Still Rockin’ The Unband comes to film Ed. note: This article originally appeared in the first incarnation of Youngstown Pulse sometime between 2003-05. B.J. LISKO Youngstown Pulse Magazine Editor God damnit. I didn’t want to drink tonight. But of course, a night I designate as “recovery,” in a very loose sense, there in the rusty tin box at the end of the driveway is the documentary of The Unband, “We Like To Drink, We Like to Play Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Fuckin’ assholes. Two viewings of this, 12 beers later, and here I am at the computer. I’ve been call...
After Akron's famed Houseguest had taken an open-ended hiatus, musician David Rich was looking for some new blood to play some tunes. Enter Dave Giffels, who Rich had known since the days of Main Street's now defunct Lime Spider. Giffels' band Difficult had also stopping playing together so the time was fitting. The two dudes started writing music last summer with the likes of Friday Mike and Pat McNulty, who both played in The Same Things that sadly had also called it quits. And May Company was born. Buzzbin Magazine caught up with Rich to discuss the recent workings of this exciting new ...
Just like every great hero in history, Photon Man and Oblivion are unassuming. When they aren’t wooing crowds with their cosmic funk and space rap, they look like two normal dudes. The celestial duo grew up together in Port Clinton, Ohio, and, as Oblivion put it, “We played music together as soon as we started getting angsty.” Yet it wasn’t official until about a year ago, when they joined forces as Galactic Moustache. Oblivion’s and Photon Man’s separate bands were playing on the same bill, and the guys decided to do a song together. After that, they were in demand. As for ...
He’s Townes Van Zandt’s protégé, and if Van Zandt said he was good, no one can argue with that. The Grammy-winning artist mixes country and southern rock and has recorded songs with dudes like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Travis Tritt. ...
A night of Akron punk rock is in the cards: The dudes of Don Austin will join the ranks of legendary punkers Zero Defects for a show that already has “epic” written all over it. Openers Weird Penis will only add to the awesomeness. MORE INFO HERE...
