It only takes two people to start a party or a band — both proven by Vancouver’s rock duo Japandroids. Brian King and David Prowse thrive on their energetic live shows, having toured extensively following the release of their debut album, “Post-Nothing,” in 2009. They’re back at it this year with the June 5 release of their second full-length album, entitled “Celebration Rock.” Japandroids try to emulate the interactive crowd experience when they record, resulting in a straightforward, balls-out sound that doesn’t rely on studio tricks. King says that he and Prowse have hone...

Canal Fulton native DJ Mekadog cites a childhood love of music as the reason for his acquiring a turntable at age 26. An expanded record collection followed, and so did his venture into professional turntabling. Mekadog began to play in heavy-metal bands in Canton. The experience led to the recording of his first concept/scratch album, “Dog vs. Cat,” released by local indie label Intolerance Records. Together with “Dog vs. Cat” collaborator MC Wally, he evolved the recording project into a live hip-hop act with much local success, though this would hardly be the beginning of his care...

The Juke Hounds Formed in late 2006, The Juke Hounds ventured on a special mission to put the “Juke” spin on the standard blues sound. By adding a high energy approach, an uplifting twist to the songs, and upbeat musicianship, The Juke Hounds built a loyal following regionally. Most folks don’t realize there’s another side to the blues - an upside that keeps the listener smilin’, dancin’ and swinging . . . and that’s where The Juke Hounds set their mark. The Juke Hounds members are Bob Gardner (lead guitar and lead vocals), Gerard Dominick (bass and backup vocals), Jimm...

I’m sure by this point you’ve probably guessed, but I love video games, man. The odds are pretty decent that (sadly) I’m never going to get a chance to murder 15 wrongdoers in a span of 10 seconds while giving exactly zero percent of a shit about it, but in video games it’s an everyday thing. Especially in the Assassin’s Creed (AC) series, where you sneak, kill and disappear so fluidly you’ll think you’re Bruce goddamn Lee. So when Ubisoft announced another full-length AC so soon after the last, I was pumped to give the series another run. “Assassin’s Creed: Revelations”...

We caught up with Dalin Jones, bassist and vocalist of Son Of Neckbeard, Canton, Ohio's own horror rock band. Here's our 10 questions for Son of Neckbeard: Who the hell is Neckbeard? Neckbeard is the being. He is the alpha and omega. He is the creator. He's so much bigger than anyone could ever be. We always pictured him as some type of Viking god, but it takes so many parts to be a god. So we're the Son of Neckbeard. Tell me about what inspires your sound? There's just a really broad spectrum. We're fans of everything from Sleep, FuManchu and all the way back to bands like The Doobie...

Music critics, while notoriously fussy, are charged with a daunting task: Objectively describing a purely nonobjective subject. Of course this also opens the floodgates for nearly anyone to pass themselves off as serious press. This is something that Johnny Bell, frontman for psych-punk band Crystal Antlers, is all too familiar with — though he doesn’t believe in what he reads, or more precisely, what he doesn’t read. “Everyone has their right to pontificate, but why listen to anyone else when now you have access to any music anywhere, anytime,” Bell said. “You think some 19-...

Initially formed by guitarist Jeremey Poparad as a way to jam out with a handful of friends who were moving out of state, Axon-Neuron became something else entirely. Within a matter of a few months, the band banged out a full-length and even booked a few gigs in the Akron area. The result was Bring Songs, the band’s first full-length album in which they recorded in May of this year. The members of Axon-Neuron call themselves a rock band with jazz and classical influences but this writer sees things a tad bit differently. At first listen, the jazz and classical inspirations stick out like ...

Damone Roll the Dice No one wears their influences on their sleeve quite like Damone. The band’s last record “Out Here All Night” was put out by Island Records, and I’m pretty sure Jay-Z had something to do with that. Unfortunately for Damone, Jay-Z isn’t much on the 80s rock and the band’s new full-length effort, “Roll the Dice” was released via MySpace, as well as a handful of copies through CDBaby. Regrettably, the new disc surpassed its predecessor and I’m not so sure the masses will get to hear it unless some label picks it up. Where the fuck is Sanctuary when you need...

Airbourne No Guts, No Glory When Airbourne stormed onto the circuit a few years ago with “Running Wild,” it was a straight, brutal throwback to AC/DC and Rose Tattoo with a bit of sharper edge. The album was arguably better than some of AC/DC’s recent efforts (sans “Ballbreaker” which was and is insanely underrated), and certainly had the energy and tenacity of a “Let There Be Rock” or “Assault and Battery.” Unfortunately, “No Guts, No Glory” is the inevitable sophomore slump. Like so many bands before them Airbourne honed its sound and material for the first record, wh...

On August 6, the Auricle is hosting a benefit for Brian Hudson. Hudson was involved in a car accident in June, and he suffered injuries including a severed spine and a broken back. The 27 year old was in the intensive care unit for three weeks before he was able to eat and breathe on his own. He will never walk again, but the money that is made from this show will help with recovery down the road. Mr. Gnome is headlining the benefit along with minimalist folk rocker Jaybird Goody and folkies duo Zen and Jane. The benefit is being put together by friends and family of Hudson. Mr. Gnome s...
